Home Network Internal Chat

I'm often sitting with my wife watching TV while we're both online. In the living room when she's on her laptop, or using the HTPC, "communal surfing" is easy enough.

But I'd like a quick way to have a chat window open so when we're both in the office, we can just zip links to eachother.

I keep a text file open on a shared network folder which is fine and dandy, but a simple, no frills chat setup for the network would be way better.

can someone suggest a way to pull this off?

Seems like Office Communicator would be ideal, but I don't know the specs required to run it. At work it's integrated with out EIS infrastructure, but I'm not sure if its possible to run it on a home network. Some of the more advanced network people here might have some more valuable input.

MSN, Yahoo, AIM, GTalk, they would all work. They are all free. Otherwise you could try BorgChat if you want to setup your own server. I haven't set on up yet.
