About how much would a home network cost in general for a 3 comp LAN?

If it helps, I already have one CAT6 cable, a router, but no network cards

Thanks,

$70 at most.

20 for each of the NICs.
10 for 3 ethernet cables (short ones...for long ones you'll pay more of course)

you can get cable for 25 bucks for 1000 feet. make it yourself out of that roll.
NIC's, if you shop around, arent more than 3-5 dollars. (i got a 6 dollar linksys 10/100 the other day)
but for quality
buy pre-made cat6
get intel pro NICs

Ok three more things.

#1 - I have a cat6 cable gonig from my router to my comp.

#2 - One of my comp's in the network is going to be very crappy, and will not run with XP. Does it make it hard to have a network if one comp has win95/2000?

#3 Where are some tutorials on setting up networks?

Sorry Fury, thaqt site just isn't much help to me, keep in mind, i have NO experiance with networks or anything of the sort, and I just can't quite grasp the concept from that site.

If anyone knows site better fit for a newcomer, that would be appreiciated. If not, I guess this is a lost cuase :(

windows 95 is a royal bitch.
win2k however, will network just like XP will...but dont expect it to easily talk to XP machines.

ok thanks.

Do you know of any tutorials that are complety user-friendly or anything?

It may be beneficial for you to post what you're hoping to achieve with this network... Is it to connect your computers to the internet? Do you want to share files between the computers? Play games?

Are you going to be able to do the physical part of the setup? Actually installing the NIC's and plugging in the cables to the router appropriately?

if all you want to do is have everyone get online its simple, plug in your modem, then your router, then your comptuers then turn them on. if you want to share files, you just have to enable the file sharing and look for the computer or the file itself this may need administrator password, and or privledges.

you can get some damn good NICs (network interface card) for $10 or if you have a micro center nere you, after rebate $1, (hawking technologies i think, every pc ive put them in sofar, they work damn good, are instaled instantly w/o their driver CD... just all around a good product, its what i use in my server, my family pc, my friends pc, (my lap top and gaming rig have onbaord )
