So I just moved to a new townhouse and it has an upstairs and downstairs which I didn't have before. I set up my primary computer downstairs and I have a second computer upstairs. There wasn't room for my printer downstairs so I put it with the upstairs computer. The only problem is I don't like to leave the upstairs PC on so when I want to print I have to go upstairs and turn on the PC to do it. I was wondering if there was some way to start up the comptuer from sleep or standby or something without actually going upstairs to do it. I have a wireless network setup with the downstairs PC connected to the router by ethernet and the upstairs connected wirelessly. I don't have any idea how to do this but I thought I would run it past the readers at the [H] and see what you think.

I dont know about via a wireless link, but with Ethernet you could set something up to use the Wake On Lan feature of your nic. I dont know if this will work wirelessly. I would suggest getting a small print server for upstairs though, minimal headache, and minimal power usage (since you said you dont like having the computer on)
I use one myself, one from Linksys and its a wireless device. Works great, and I must say it makes printing from my lappy alot easier. I got mine for $85, but they can be had a little bit cheaper if you find a rebate/sale.

First off what type of printer is it? Some printers don't play nice with print servers. The printer vendor may also make a print server for it which I would recomeend over a normal one.

I was kinda in the same boat as you about 2 years ago. I gave in and just bought a nice network color laser to replace a few inkjets though. For you I would recomend either a print server or maybe something like a bluetooth print kit(would lean to print server).
 
Thanks for the info JohnBoy. I'll look into a print server. My original plan was to build another PC to serve as a file/print server and leave it running all the time but that is just too expensive on the electric bill. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to which brand/model of wireless print server to go with. I've had 2 netgear routers and I'm not very fond of them (got them b/c of rebates). I guess one of the linksys ones might be alright but I would appreciate feedback.

If you want to do the whole extra pc thing look into like a neoware terminal or something. You can get a 800 mhz one for like less then 100 bucks if you look around on ebay and they don't use that much power compaired to a normal machine. I got one running xp embeded that would work fine as a printer sever and then could do whatever elce you wanted it to do. One of them with either a notebook hd or a cf card running like damn small linux working as a little server that also does print server fuctions would work well.
 
if your willing to build another computer to use just for a print server and leave it on all the time. Why not just leave the one you have hooked up to it on all of the time?

I decided I don't want to leave it on all the time. That's the problem. It was eating up way too much electricity. I couldn't justify letting a machine run all the time to handle printer/file server jobs when it was using so much electricity. I may consider it again now that the weather is getting cooler but with the A/C this summer my electric bills were getting pretty high.
