I just ordered my Centurion 590 and 4 120mm Scythe case fans. I live in a very dusty room in a very dusty house. The case has foam covering the intake fan on the front BUT im adding two more intake fans on the side and would like to protect the guts from all this dust!

I was thinking about buying some foam/mesh covering and some how attach it to the side intake fans. Save my new Q9450 from all this dust!

Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks

This probably isn't the answer you were looking for, but maybe you should approach this problem from another perspective and solve your "very dusty house" problem. Unless you live in a house made of dirt, or in the Oklahoma dust bowl era, you would likely benefit from some good HVAC filters (something around a MERV 10 rating) and maybe a good carpet cleaning.

Maybe an SOS pad, i think they're called,..?,... Like the thin green squares? Might work as a filter,...

Use a furnace/AC filter and cut it to size. They are made to allow air to go through them while filtering dust/pollen/etc. You can even choose the grade you want with some brands. 3M Filtrete are particularly good.

3M Filtrete clogs up really quickly though and they aren't really re-usable or washable.

I tried a bunch of different types of filters to catch dust before my intake fans pulled it in, but none really panned out too well for me. I ended up buying an air cleaner for my office.

Which shows that they work. If the filter doesn't clog, then your computer's guts will clog. Your choice.

and they aren't really re-usable or washable.

It would be nice if they were. If you buy the refills sold for plastic frames (rather than the cardboard frame ones), they are half the price of the cardboard-framed filters (actually, the same price for two filters) and you have enough to do quite a few fan filters.

I use an AC filter cut to size like stated above. There are a number of ways you could mount it, with boxed frames, grills, between bezel and internal fan, etc.

Used dryer sheets. ;)
Or new, if you'd like to add the nice smell. :D

Hey people, I would like share with you what I use, "window" AC filter material, found at any hardware store. It is washable, 1/4'',3/8'',thickness and cheap.;)

One great way to cut the dust going into your computer is to place it on a solid surface other than Carpet or a rug. a desk/tile/rubbermat all work well. If you still are having dust issues, try using either screen mesh from an old screen, or an old sock actually works well, just cut it to size, just make sure it isnt too old. (you know with bigass holes in it) lol ;)

I agree, stop the problem at the source.

I'd be more worried about me breathing that crap in for extended periods of time than my computer getting a little dusty.

Rofl... I agree, dust can harm your lungs Oo

I have to agree with the "clean your room" guys. I live next to a main road so I know how bad it can be. However, there are things you can do to help.

I have a Sharp air cleaner. It really helps, both with cleaning and allergies. Moving the machine off the floor really makes a big difference too.

Getting a small vacuum cleaner or an attachment for your large one is a good idea too. If you clean regularly, it stops the build up of dust so it's a lot easier.

Kind of a stupid question since I probably know the answer, but I found a pack of 12 Vent Filters(blue and yellow package) of, well, vent filters, and was going to use them to help keep dust from entering the side vents on my Centurion 5. However, they naturally create an electrostatic charge. I'm no expert, but that doesn't sound like something I should be using in a computer case. What say you guys?

I guess I should just add some more intake fans to create a high-pressure situation.

yeah id say replace ur furnace/ac's air filter and vaccum your room really good twice... and the whole house if your ambitous(sp).

I definately agree in eliminating the problem at the source.

If you live in a house made of dirt post pix! lol

isnt that adobe? also i agree i ahve been using pantyhose for years. it comes in colors. it can cover multiple fans and ducts with one pair. they are cheap and easy to find and replace. and they dont restrict airflow much at all. how can you go wrong. besides when the person at the store looks at you carzy when you are a man buying ladys pantyhose. buffalo bill anyone?

Back in the day, I used pantyhose, then 'upgraded' to a worn out cotton t-shirt doubled over, then eventually just resorted to using worn out (but bleach-washed) socks cut and stretched to fit.

I must say, socks are nice filters. Don't know about restricting airflow, but my case back then rarely ever needed dusting.
