I was just walking around when i smell something really funny....like burning processor or summat...so i run over to my server 1.2 GHZ AMD Tbird and crack open the case and the fan is barely running, check the temp and it's at 161 F, shut it down immediately and put a huge box fan along the side of the case....i havent cleaned it in forever so do you think if i clean it and start it back up again it'll be alright?
 
It might still especially since it was running before you turned it off. I've never seen any holy carp...how do they taste? I prefer salmon </BADJOKE>

holy carp are good :)

but how high has anyone seen a tbird run because i know they normally run hot...mine's usually between 120 - 130

You were at borderline maximum according to AMD. The warning limit is 90*C and you were around 89*C...you should be fine.
 
If your CPU fan was barely turning, I wouldn't fire it up again until you replace that fan. Don't be surprised if the thing is permanently damaged by the strain of trying to spin through all the dust/dirt/grime/whatever. Better safe than sorry.

Whew, glad i caught it when i did lol. The fan was spinning like it was gimp.

Yeah i'll probly head out to the local PC shop tommorrow. My customers will be a little peeved though....
 
Should be fine, because you caught it before anything major happened. Yeah I would replace HS/Fan before you try to turn it on.
 
Got to recommend a new HSF with a fresh coat of a good thermal compound applied to a clean CPU and HSF. Blow out the PSU / case with some canned air while you are at it.

....that should square the PC away; I don't have any words of wisdom about the carp....:D
