this may sound noobish but i am a noob.

I need to buy a 7/8" hole saw. I have found one. But does it just fit on to any normal drill or do you need an adaptor of some sort????
 
There has been an adaptor needed for every hole saw that I've used. It's like a regular bit, except that it is square and has some method of screwing the actual hole saw to the bit so that it is secure. I doubt that my description made sense, but the answer is yes there is an adaptor needed in most if not all cases.
