Hole on the Celeron D?

I realize this is a very noobish question, but I am curious, what is the hole in the corner of the Celeron D processor (and most other Intel processors for that matter) for? I ask because I am moving my Celeron D from my Dell Optiplex to an Asus S-Presso barebone and I realized that thermal compound had made it into the hole.
 
It's just an aerating hole, the glue/thermal stuff that intel puts between the actual core and the heatspreaders is applied, obviously, moist. as it dries, the hole is there to make sure there is not negative/positive pressure


i think it's okay if paste goes in there...

I'm looking for the intel design document now. Will post better answer later.
EDIT: Found THIS Seems like a plausible reason to me. There is no reference to it in any of the docs for the Celeron, CeleronD or Pentium4. I don't remember seeing the hole on my C2D....maybe they don't use epoxy anymore, and therefore don't need a vent hole?
