I'm debating between getting a gtx 460 and a HD6850, to be honest they look identical about now, according to every forum/review thread i've seen. But future revisions/drivers, which do you think is the best way to go?
 
They trade blows now, and they will trade blows forever.
If you're not particular to a brand, then check to see which card performs better in specific games you enjoy.

Beyond that, look (and wait) for a sale, buy whichever is cheaper.

All else fails, flip a coin.

I'd go for the 460 but at least wait until black friday comes, you never know what might pop up.

Maybe I'm just bitter with AMD drivers though.
 
Utopia sid it well.

I would go for the 6850, but both are good comparable cards. If you were planning to get a second at some point, you could look to see which is better in a dual card scenario.

what is the rest of your system specs? if you can run either xfire or sli that makes a difference even if your not really planning on it (gives an upgrade option if nothing else)

the 460 and the 6850 are very good overclockers with a small nod toward the 6850 (this is very debatable.)

the 6850 uses less power but the difference isn't even comparable to the GF100 based cards

the 6850 brings certain features that the Nvidia card doesn't have and vice versa. the 6850 brings CFAA, MLAA (this one kicks ass even as a first gen), along with different other features that both cards share by different names. the 460GTX brings some of their own AA items (nothing that stands out that much really) and does support physx and has a better 3d game support then AMD does right now. While the physx is not very impressive to me (not worth the performance hit or even running) some people think its awesome. so that is a matter of preference. 3d only matters if you have a monitor to support it. both will play 3d movies as well as the other

really I think you will be happy with either.
 
Right now I was hesitant to go with the 460s, just because of the supposed price scheming that Nvidia is doing according to Tom's Hardware.. they claim Nvidia temporarily dropped the prices of the 460s to compete with the 6850s and that they're going to raise them in about one week.

But then of course, the 460s dropped further, and the 6850s went up slightly...

Right now I'm running a e6600 (i know soon to be a q6600, and i know still going to be a bottleneck) but im holding on to the 775 league for now...

Thanks for the responses, I guess I'll be going with the cheaper of the two, as all I really use it for is SC2

man I think i might need glasses haha. Thanks for the links, it looks pretty sweet actually, but I had to really look to see the difference.

Looks like im going with the 460 just because of the relative gain from the lower cost.

why would the q6600 be a bottleneck? i haven't heard of a single game that causes an overclocked q6600 to bottleneck a GPU.

Probably, never had unresolvable issues with ATI drivers. Meaning, sometimes you need a different driver and then you are sorted, which is exactly the same situation with Nvidia.

With a long line of single GPU ATI cards behind me, I have had absolutely zero real driver problems. That being said, I don't run crossfire or Eyefinity.

Same for me. I've had ATI cards for many years and have never had an issue.
 
I would just buy now, only thing you be missing out on is maybe a extra $10 rebate. Prices on a 460 are so good right now, it's not worth it to wait at all.
 
Actually, the gigabyte 460 has a $10 MIR right now lol. Plus with neweggs coupon... man hard to fight that.
 
Black Friday is Black Friday, odds of finding a better deal make it worth the wait from this point in time. As for the GTX vs 6850, pros and cons for both, as someone mentioned, find which card performs better on the software your running or simply follow the brand of your choice. If it was me, Bang for the Buck factor would over rule anything else where these two cards are concerned.
 
Black Friday is now officially a noob shopping holiday.

The best way to go is to set up a deal alert at slickdeals and use the terms, 6850 and GTX 460 in two separate entries. Get to know current deals by doing searches on prior deals.

For example, I just bought an Asus 768MB GTX 460 for $115 AR and it came with HAWX 2 which I just sold for $18. Used fatwallet cashback for an extra -$2.70 so I paid around $95 for it...

A 1GB should be $145 or less for it be a good hot deal in my opinion. I don't think it has happened yet but I am pretty sure it will this month as this is a big month for sales/yearly quotas and there might be a GTX 560 soon.

6850 is new so I wouldn't expect too much of a discount but I wouldn't buy it unless it were at 10% off of msrp.

Well, you can get some of the other ones with special coolers for $220 tops wich can be self OC (with easy to use included software) to reach similar levels. I'm going to get a Gigabyte or MSI soon...
 
Don't buy a factory overclocked, there's no fucking point to getting a 460 unless it's to save money lol.
They all overclock good (easily to the fastest factory overclocked 460's clocks) and then some.
Get the cheapest one you find and clock it yourself!!!
