yeah I somehow have this game already (bundle or free giveaway or something?) but no interest in the books/franchise/etc - but now I might give it a go when DLSS 5 drops 🤔

I have never watched the movies nor read the books, and have never had an interest in Potter. In spite of that, the game is fantastic and well worth playing.

HBO has a new Harry Potter TV series coming in 2027...all 7 books, 1 book per season...I thought the movies were fine with a great cast...I'm not sure a reboot was needed but apparently this will be a more faithful book adaptation as the movies cut out a lot of content

Probably. Also, as this game showed, why not quit doing the books over and over and instead do something else in the universe? Had this been the Harry Potter game, I probably wouldn't have bought it. Games where you just replay a book tend to suck. What made it fun was being in the same universe and meeting some characters you'd heard about but not met, yet it was a new story.

I am hopeful that them being able to expand from the books with more details might make it a worthwhile experience (the hbo reboot), but I agree with the expanded universe idea. The beasts movies were pretty good.
 
people have the original movie cast engrained in their minds...the new cast needs to be light years better for people to accept them as Harry, Ron, Hermione, Snape, Dumbledore, Voldemort etc...I hear the HBO series is one of the most expensive TV series ever made...Amazon also poured a crazy amount of $$ into their LOTR prequel- The Rings of Power, with mixed results

TRoP was more of a disaster that had to keep going for how much money they dumped into it. It wasn't financially successful at all, which I suspect the HBO series will hit the same wall due to their casting choices & other various liberties taken.
 
Back in the old days Walmart say 20 years ago kids waited for waited for Harry Potter Books and movies and Twilight. They pulled up chairs waited maybe starting at 8:00pm

The biggest line for a game I seen was the Black Opps 2 release.
 
LOL, I remember the Harry Potter midnight book lines and the assholes passing out the leaked page about Dumbledore dying to the crowds and whatnot.
As far as game lines go, I think the biggest ones I can recall were for Mortal Kombat. The whole "Mortal Monday" promotion thing. It was a normal school day, but that didn't seem to matter. At my local mall there were lines for both the toy store and the EB that were pretty deep. Normally that kind of thing would only happen when a new console was being launched.

Either way, free Hogwarts is never a bad thing. I struggled to get the game running well, but once I did, I had a blast with it. For what it was supposed to be I don't know if they could have done a much better job with it. Frankly, I'm not sure how they'll make any sequels without repeating 1/2 of the things in it.

Biggest line I ever saw was for Wrath of the Lich King midnight launch. I don't know when people got started in it but when I looked at like 8pm it was sizable. I went home and fell asleep and woke up at like 1am. Went back there and it was all gone, walked in and got a copy.

These days I imagine lines aren't a thing since digital distribution is so prevalent.

Our malls GameStop gets decent lines on release dates, no so much for games but collectibles and pokemon. Though I suspect that physical media and linux distros will make a comeback with the big names starting the "you don't own it, you barrow it" mentality
 
Console releases still draw big lines. Hell, the 50-series lines outside of Microcenter locations were pretty epic. There's a time and place for locking something down in person. I can't imagine games leading to that again unless somebody big (like Rockstar) decides to do a gimmicky physical-only release for a game. Then again, the time for that could be coming to a close, too. Not unless they want to sell USB sticks or something.

The number of people that care about "not owning" games is miniscule IRL and has a large intersection with people that would never line up at gamestop to buy a game at release.

For sure. Most people who buy physical media do it because they like having something they can hold or because it is more fun to give as a gift than a download code. They aren't thinking about the larger issue of ownership. This idea that gamers are going to switch to Linux, demand open source, read license agreements and demand ownership and support is quite silly. No, most just don't care.

If steam, epic, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo decided one day just to wipe half the catalog and like Amazon does with books just automatically delete them off the devices I'm pretty sure there would be a massive revolt. Shoot I'm rolling to go down to a fifth of the catalogs just gone forever and automatically deleted from devices they are installed on.....

How do I have a decent game library that I have legal access to? Sure most of us on this page do. When I'm able to get another gaming computer am I going to install those launchers and the games from there? No I will straight up pirate them to get around the BS DRM and all that nonsense :p

If that happens, maybe people will start caring about physical distribution but right now, they don't. You may and that's fine, but the average gamer doesn't.

Physical discs rot, metal corrodes - digital preservation aka piracy is all that matters and Steam games in leu of being digital are already halfway there, already pirate/cracked Steam apps, not really a big worry TBH

It's also why I like given GOG my business, when possible. I have backup copies of the installers of games from there. Probably never need them but nice to have and I like to reward businesses who allow that. Of course there are plenty of games I can't get on GOG because publishers like DRM, and I'm not a zealot about it I'll happily buy on Steam too. But if there's an option, I opt for GOG.
