Hogwarts Legacy

To be fair, and I am probably mentioned this when I was playing, but my character was wearing a mishmash of garb that made them look like the mass murdering, unforgivable curse hurling, klepto, zero sleeping maniac that the game directed me to be. I started getting A Clockwork Orange vibe as it all wore on, and I wasn't even house Snek. haha

I always loved when you'd walk in to the clothing store and the guy would say "I suspect you have a sharp eye for fashion," when you look like you'd just grabbed random shit off the rack at a thrift store.

Warner Bros. Cancels Planned ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ Game Expansion

Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. canceled a planned expansion for its popular Hogwarts Legacy title as part of an ongoing restructuring at the entertainment company’s video-game unit...Warner canceled the project this week in part due to concerns that the amount of content was not substantial enough to justify the price being considered, said the people familiar, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to talk to the press

Avalanche Software was developing this version of the best-selling game of 2023 with the help of Rocksteady...a few months ago, insider Tom Henderson wrote that Hogwarts Legacy Definitive Edition was scheduled to launch in 2025 with 10–15 hours of new content and a price of $20–30 for owners of the base game

the plans weren’t publicly announced, but were reported last year by Bloomberg...a spokesperson for Warner Bros. declined to comment...

lol they thought people would pay another 20-30 for an update. cancel that shit or release it for free.

Ya I for sure would have paid for an expansion. The game wasn't like GOAT material, but it was real good I enjoyed my time in it, my GF played it and enjoyed her time in it, etc. I'd pay for more.

i agree that it was a good game, but i paid $80CAN for it, im not paying another 30-40 for an enhancement and a couple more missions. thats dumb. if it was more significant maybe, but the "not worth it" was probably right.

I finished the Crosswand Championship I have 12 hours in the game hardly feel like I progressed. Those kids kept casting spells so I put up the barrier and deflected the spells back at them took me like 20 tries to win

Messing around with the settings as I begin a first playthrough.... RT looked like hot garbage IMO until I figured out how to enable ray reconstruction (must enable DLSS at a min quality setting). FPS around 100, everything ultra with RR @1440p DLSS Quality.

I'm assuming the mods are just consmetic?

Most are. I haven't played since they opened their official mod shop but most of the mods on Nexus Mods were just cosmetic changes. The only mod I grabbed was a respec potion mod, which is now part of the game so not needed. There's also a "get rid of the lockpick minigame" mod that seems popular but I never had any issues with the minigame so I left it in.

I got back into this game and it's running so so nicely and is beautiful on my 45" LG (1440p uw) (EDIT, had to check the game for the settings)
  • Upscale Type: NVIDIA DLSS
  • Upscale mode: DLSS quality
  • Frame Generation: On x2
  • Ray Reconstruction: ON
  • NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency: ON
  • VSync: Off
  • Framerate: 240
I did this and it locked my framerate automatically at 240 (native refresh rate for the display).
It feels like 240 also, wow.. everything on ultra with DOF, motion blur, film grain, and CA = OFF.. It's running super!

I remember a handful of non-cosmetic mods, including some that added timed NPC schedules. Students and professors would go to class, lunch, certain areas would be open or closed at different times etc. "Immersive ModPack" I think is the newest version, but there's also "NPC Schedule Enhanced" ; you can only choose one, and I think the former is more comprehensive but I am not sure. There's an extension to this that adds curfew so if you're wandering around the halls at night you'll get sent back to your room by a prefect or teacher and fined (Night Curfew + Immersive Prefect Patrols) ; I think there are a couple of custom quests that are built on this. I vaguely remember a custom questline mod that allows players to go to an area that normally only those from one particular house go as part of their questline. "Azkaban" adds consquences for using any Unforgivable Curses in front of most "civilians" , where apparently Ministry agents will be dispatched to try to take you in. "Spells Enhanced" adds like 20 new spells, most of which are unlocked via custom quests. "Expecto Patronum" seems to have a whole quest chain, dungeon and boss battle as well as unlocking a customized version of the spell. "House Point System" adds what looks to be a reasonably complex House Point system, as opposed to the base game's visual representation but no actual house point mechanic.

I read that there is an in-game mod browser now, but some of the more comprehensive ones may still require manual install. If I'm correct, it seems the in-game mod browser is connected to CurseForge so you may want to check there first, as well as NexusMods. I should mention all those I mentioned above are from reading their mod pages - I'm not sure if some of them are buggy etc. Just be sure to check for compatibility. It is good there seem to be some mods beyond just the basic cosmetic though. Its really disappointing that there was no "definitive edition" or planned expansion.

cant redeem it, servers must be getting hammered. at least its good until the 18th...

wut

I didn't even play it for real yet and it is free?

Getting it on epic worked for me right now.

Wouldn't work for me last night, but it went through for me just now. Nice freebie indeed.

So how is performance for everyone on this game?

From what I found online it was awful with RT and not even a 4090 could run max settings, but I'm getting 60-90 FPS on my current rig 7800x3D + 5070Ti. I'm thinking the game got many performance patches overtime, anyone else with similar experience or am I being gaslit?

From what I know, Hogsmeade is where your frames will start tanking because of all the NPC's.

it played it fine on my 6700.
adjust your settings, you dont need max settings.

I paid for ray tracing I want to use ray tracing ;-;

Otherwise yeah I've gamed on crappy laptops for years, max settings are a fruitless endeavor.

Seems ray tracing in this game really hammers the CPU. Looks nice though

So it's mixed. One thing is that there's a LOT of difference, performance wise, between the open world and the enclosed settings, and there are lots of both. When I crank up the RT all the way the open world can kind drag ass, 50s-60s usually (on a 4090) whereas inside the castle it flys, often over 120.

Also RT hits this game pretty hard, particularly depending on the kind of RT. If you turn some or all of it off, it performs a lot better. I'm real on the fence if I like the RT or not. When I played it, I ended up turning off all RT except for reflections, and editing the configs to up the RT reflection quality. The lighting and shadows not only hit pretty hard in the open world, but inside they caused some really weird issues with some areas being way too bright or dark. Ray Reconstruction seems to help with that problem (it wasn't in the game at the time I started playing) but of course that slows down the framerate even more. I'm still not sure if I do a replay that I'll do it with all the RT on, because while some areas look great, in others it causes issues.

Also frame gen is kinda crap in this game. It seems to cause a fair number of visual artifacts so it doesn't work so well as a way to make up lower performance.

My kid just started reading the first Harry Potter book. It might be the perfect timing for him to try out this game when DLSS5 drops.
