Really though, 4 GHz should be more than achievable in the time frame given. Hell people are already overclocking current and therfore 'older' technology past the 4 GHz mark. Also if you read the reports closely you will see they say 'parts' of the core runs over 4 GHz, not all of it.

EDIT: Physical proof? You have a $50,000 o'scope around to test it?

It damn well better be stable. Heat will be a huge issue though. As for paying more to do the same stuff you can currently do, many of us are guilty of that. I upgrade about once per year. My old kit plays the same games just fine, but the new kit makes it a bit prettier and have slightly better framerates.

This chip is intended for the new PS3, so it needs to be an improvement and also groundbreaking to compete with computers/Xbox/Nintendo's. It also needs to be somewhat inexpensive with whole system retailing below $400 on release.

Yeah the Cell looks pretty impressive, but most stuff does in its vaporware status :p

And is it just me or has IBM been getting into the console arena more and more? (XBOX2,PS3, Gamecube, etc..)

Sure, I could see it doing 4GHz, but I bet it would have a crappy IPC at that speed.
