hmmm crt or lcd

lately my current 19" CRT has been giving me fuzzy text.....also after a few hours of coding on it behind my eyes starts to hurt.......i'm looking at upgrading my whole comp...should i go for the samsung 710t for 429 or should i save money and just buy a better crt, i spend most of my time playing games and coding....???
 
Decent LCD's have come far down in price in the past few years. You can get a decent (16ms response time) 17'' for under $300. Of course, a 19'' will be more, but I think you get get one for ~400 now.

If you are into gaming, be sure to get nothing less than a 16ms response time screen, or you will probably see ghosting.
 
i say LCD for everyting. i recently made the jump from my viewsonic 17" CRT to a advueu 17" 16ms 1280x1024 lcd and the difference is amazing. text is super clear, it is easy on the eyes, and games still look great. i think games even look better on the lcd than they did on my 17" crt or my NEC 22" crt.

i notice no ghosting and there is a little motion blur, but for me it looks more realistic, i mean turn your head really fast, or spin around on your chair in the middle of your office/room and you will see blur. in games it is no where near that extreme, and you to me it makes the game look smoother and better.

Agreed.

I prefer LCDs for pretty much everything except gaming. It's not that LCDs suck for gaming but CRTs are perfect for it. They have high contrast, true blacks, truer colors, look good at all resolutions and have response time of less than 1ms.

Maybe I just don't notice it, but I have a Dell E171FPb. 25ms response time. I see no ghosting whatsoever.

I'm starting to think rated response times are just general ratings rather than an accurate assessment, kind of like 3dMark.

Ah, cool. I've just read around, and in general gamers swear by 16ms. I guess it depends on the gamer's eye's, and the brand of the monitor, too.

it depends on alot of things as some others have said. since you spend your time doing alot of gaming as well as rerading alot of text an LCD or a CRT would be fine. it depends more on how much you want to spend, what size of desk area you have and a few other things. if you are willing to spend a bit more then i'd say go for an LCD w/ pivot for reading long text things. a CRT will deliver *slghtly* better response for gaming but unless your a die hard "professional" gamer it probably wont make any difference to you. i know it doesnt for me personally. basically if you have the means to, get an LCD
 
well, i've ran CRT's (all 19 inches) for the past 4 or 5 years....LCD's came out, but the first ones to come out sucked something horrible....yea, they looked ultra-sleek, and somewhat sexy, but you could only look at them one way.

Then they got better, and response time became the issue, with ghosting in games....being an avid gamer, i loved my CRT since I had no ghosting to worry about.

Tonight I just got my first LCD...A Sony 19inch with 12ms response time...the fastest you can get. I can see NO ghosting at all, and the image is sooooo much clearer. Mind you my CRT was getting old, but if you get a badass response time, LCD works great with games too. Try one out first to make sure you like it, I know I love my new found change.

Slightly? 16ms vs a few nanoseconds for a quantum energy change...
 
Unless you plan on spending a LARGE chunk of change to get an LCD for gaming then a CRT will always been more pleasing to the eye..even if the asthetics are not heh..

But I would be more worried about my eyes crapping out from using a computer too much. Spend the money you would on the LCD get a good CRT and start saving for the laser eye surgery you will eventually need.
