I have a 9600 Pro and was thinking about getting a 6600GT to replace it. My system is not an extreme gaming machine by any standards but I would love to play my games with everything on at 1024x768 (highest my LCD goes). I have an extra 17" crt in the closet but that one only goes up to 1280x1024 @ 60Hz so I don't feel like straining my eyes. Anyway back to the specs...

Shuttle ST61G4 SFF (ATI 9100IGP)
P4 2.4A (Can overclock if i wanted to 3.2GHz but I'm currently running stock)
OCZ PC3700 2x256 Gold Rev2
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Maxtor DiamondPlus 9 120GB
Sony 52x32x52 Burner

Now as I said, I'd like a vid card that can give me playable fps with AA and AF at their highest @ 1024x768. Is the 6600GT gonna be able to do that? I'd like to keep the price around the $200 point as much as I can as I don't have much money to spend. Thoughts?
 
HL2 Bronze and Halo are really the only big ones. I can run all of my other games fine with no AA and no AF. Halo i have on its highest and I prolly avg under 30fps and HL2 has everything on Medium and I usually get 40-50fps. UT2k4 gets about 60fps everything at high, no AA/AF. I'm thinkin I should maybe wait til I get more gfx intensive games no?
 
If I don't upgrade, I figure maybe upgrading the cooling on both the card and northbridge with this...

I'm hoping that anyone who bought this kit could tell me their experience with it. Is it good? I have a Vantec Iceberq 4 right now so I was wondering if i could get a whole lot better cooling with it so i could overclock cuz this cooler kinda sucks. I'm also wondering how the chipset cooler does as well cuz this IGP runs VERY hot when the system is under load. We're talkin 68C and the video is disabled lol.

EDIT: Also wondering if its gonna fit in the shuttle. i figure there is enough clearance at the top but i'm thinkin about how close its gonna come to the side of the case. i wouldn't worry about that if i had the mesh case but i can't find one anywhere plus shuttles store is down so that sucks.

How do you know you can overclock your PC to 3.2? Your system is at the point where its getting pritty outdated. Personally, if I were in your situation, I would hold onto the money and save up, focussing on upgrading on a nice motherboard, cpu combo. Then the rest of my system piece by piece if need be.

HL2 is a cpu intensive game, not gpu intensive.

Also, there are ppl with x800 xt's and 6800 ultras the dont use full aa and af.

I am assuming your cpu is fully stable at 3.2ghz like you said... i would grab a new videocard then........6600gt is your best bet.. unless you can get a nice price on a 6800nu./.... but my vote is for the 6600gt plus ur cpu @ 3.2ghz and that would be nice :)
 
My geforce 3 ti200 64mb played HL2 on 640x480 medium settings resolution. I think you can play HL2 at 1024x768 and probably highest settings.

6800nu would be best for AA. The 6600GT's neutered memory interface makes struggle big time with AA enabled.

BTW, how do you plan to enable AA in Halo when it uses off-scene rendering (I thought it couldn't be enabled in that game)?

Well its not that...I just wanna be able to play it with good fps. Cuz as it stands i only get about 20-30fps
