I usually don't monitor my system temps, as I don't overclock. However, I recently started Folding, and was curious as to how it affected my temps. I installed the Intel Active Monitor application and...holy crap, I was at 77C. From what I've read, 77C is pretty high for a stock Northwood P4. Am I right, or am I freaking out for no reason? If I do have reason to worry, where should I start on getting my temps under control?
 
those are some really high temps.

are you having any stability problems since you started folding?

i would say that the first thing to do would be to crack open the case, and have a look at you heatsink. is the fan spinning normally? clean it off if it has dust buildup.

next up would be to run with the die panel off for a while.

if either or both of those measures drops you temps, then i might actually be a real hardware issue.

if neither of those measuers helps at all, then it is most likely wonky temperature monitoring software.
 
That is not right at all, a system should not run that hot. You should check inside your case and make sure your fan is working and all, but that temperature reading might not be right either. Double check your temperature with something like SpeedFan or Motherboard Monitor or one of those various apps as well.
 
I can assure you that temps that high, have nothing to do with Folding. Make sure your HSF is properly mounted and your fans are working. You might try flashing up to the latest bios if you haven't. It's possible that could fix a bad sensor reading (it's just as possible that it couldn't)

It is true that Folding doesn't cause super high temperatures just because it is Folding, but it does put 100% CPU load on when it can, so it could be heating you up. Anyways, Folding is not a bad app or something, it just puts you under full load so could be warming things up too much. Of course, when you play games you are putting it under a big load as well.

True that it can contribute to heat, but 77C at a load would indicate that even idle temps are to high. Just look at the BIOS reading.

 
OK, Intel's Active Monitor and Motherboard Monitor both read in the mid-70 range. I shut down my computer and immediately opened the case. The heatsink was so hot I could barely hold my finger on it for 5 seconds. Definetely a hardware problem.

I think the cause may be my case. It's got a crapload of wires and such just lying around. And the cheap case I'm using makes wire management virtually impossible (I've tried many a time). I have a semi-good HSF (PCP&C) so I should think that would be OK, right?
 
if the heatsink is that hot, then it is probably making good contact with you processor.

re-seating it might help, but cold CPU heatsink and hot processor is more typical of poor seating than a really hot heatsink and high temp readings.

now, before you put all of the blame on the case, does taking off the side panel make a temperature difference while running?

is your core voltage where it is supposed to be?

are you running the fan on that aftermarket heatsink off the motherboard header, or of a PSU power feed?

do you have fan speed control disabled in the bios? turning off fan speed control (whatever it is called on your board) runs the fan at full speed all of the time.
 
What model heatsink specifically? It is possible that it's not built for your CPU type. Do you have good airflow from other fans in your case?

and his sig lists him at 2.6

he has also already said that his case has crummy airflow, which is why i have asked him to test without the side panel to see if that helps his temps much.

if things still run that hot with the side off, then there is more than just lousy case airflow at work here.
 
pfft, 77C just means that you are [H]ard lol, my northwood computer runs at 75C load on the CPU and the GPU!!


Then again I have a laptop with a P4 in it, so I have an excuse :D

Although, I can say that I have had my laptop for 2 years now, running it almost 24/7 for half that time and I have yet to see any heat related stability issues, and it can often be loaded for hours on end sometimes. Since my laptop is based off the same core your northwood is I wouldn't be too worried about running at 77C, although you should be able to easily bring it down at least a good 10 degrees.
 
77c HOLY CRAP DUDE...thats insanely hot, try reseating the heatsink and up the airflow in you case also try reversing the fan direction with your heatsink fan unit (cant do it with a stock cooler)

The heatsink is really hot, so that means that is probably most likely not the problem, but you could always try that.

Is there some reason why you are using a small profile heatsink like that? Those are usually for servers and the like that fit into rackmounts. It might be a good investment to purchase a larger heatsink, but first, check your airflow. Even the best heatsink can't do crap with bad airflow.
 
i must have missed the part about the mini heatsink if so he really needs to replace that
 
heh, if you are using that 1U heatsink that is your problem right there, it simply cant dissipate all of that heat and keep the processor at a lower temperature. You dont really need to worry too much though, because despite what these people say you will be fine running at 77C if you want to (the Northwood is rated up to 100C)
 
He still hasn't verified that the fan was actually working... What's the verdict, sac_tagg? You need to check this with the computer running, not shut down.
 
OK, I opened up my case for a while. All the fans are operating normally, and I cleaned the dust out. It's been runnning around 65C instead of the normal 77C. I would run it like this, but the cat gets awful curious about moving fans...and the fur plus the electricity could result in me losing both (the cat and the comp). So this ain't gonna' work. I guess my only other solution is to get a new HSF (or make that move to A64 I've been planning ^_^).
 
i wasn't really suggest running without the side panel as a long term fix, just something so that you can find out if it is a case airflow problem.

i would suggest, now that you know that bad case airflow is one of the key things keeping your temps so high, getting out some tinsnips and a drill, and putting an intake fan with finger grill in your side panel, over the CPU.

as far as i' concerned, the big plus of having a cheap case is that hacking it up to do fan mods is not usually a big deal.

Already have a hole with filter, but no fan. Your saying I should put a fan on in it, eh?
 
well, the rig that i put together for my sis is in a plain old case, but i have modded it to accept big, quiet, panaflo L1A 120mm fans.

one intake over the CPU, one exaust out the back, one intaking in front of the harddrives, one exausting beside the AGP and PCI slots.

it keeps everything down at room temperature, with a reasonable noise level.

even if your case was the typical case temp (32ºC) it would run at 62.36ºC with a perfectly clean heat sink

i'm not even an intel user, so i really don't know what a p4 2.8 puts off in terms of heat.

me, i just tried to help a guy find out where his problem lies.

if improved case airflow will help him get about 10 C improvement, then what the hey?

Well there you go. I still think the best option is to either buy a new heatsink or like you said, think about that A64 upgrade :cool:

theres only one place that gives the electrical specs of every processor in an convinient way AFAIK...dont matter who made it

yes i have, i got some nice ram tho.. it does timings listed in my sig.. at 2.55v :D
BUT the cut-off for cas2 seems to be 230 for these dimms.. could be my cpu or mobo tho.. somthings acting funny on my system.. the cpu used to run at 3.6 ghz on a different motherboard, another thing is my motherboard maxes out at 2.8v on ram but it doesnt matter because tccd doesnt neccisarily like voltage and has been known to fry above 2.8v
at 2.65v i ran it 2-2-2-5 at 200 mhz for kicks and giggles.. didnt feel like stepping the fsb up one by one to see how high it can do it tho
 
It says the max cover temp is 75C, I think that is referring to the temp of the IHS. Because if you look at the mobile P4s....which really have nothing changed besides their enhanced power saving features, and their max DIE temp is 100C. So if he is measuring the die temp he should be fine at 75C.
