So having not overclocked either system. But i thought I would be getting more ppd than 600? I'm pretty much running v7 18 hours a day. It says my core folding will take days and my gpu takes hours. I figures cores would be quicker? ANy ideas?
1) Q9550/ATI 6850
2) Q6600/ATI 4870

The ATIs will be chewing up a full core, youre better off without them, especially if you're folding SMP. Using a passkey and completed 10 units?

H.

Run -smp 3 on both of the quads and make sure you have a passkey in the client.

So i did the passkey thing and that made no diff. So i decided to try keeping my gpu running with v7 and my cpu's running with v2. No difference. I started a WU last night at midnight and it's only @ 11% 9:45 mins later. This must be odd right? If not it's pointless to run this on my cpu's
Days to finish 1 WU?

Once you've completed 10 units with a passkey you'll start getting a Quick Return Bonus for the SMP units. But also running the ATI video cards will significantly slow down the SMP units. If you just fold SMP units with the CPU you're looking at (from memory) 3-4,000 PPD. Try starting the CPU client with the -smp 3 switch, that'll reserve a CPU core for the ATI cards, and three cores for the CPU. The PPD for the CPU will drop, but you'll get a boost from the GPU's.

How do i turn it to 3 cores?

For your machine with the 4870, you are probably better off not running the GPU client at all and just going with SMP. The 4870 can't run the new ATI GPU client so you will never see good folding performance from it. As for the other machine, go with Haitch's suggestion. To limit the SMP client to 3 cores, use the -smp 3 flag in place of just -smp.

I'm new to this so still have no idea how to make the change you tell me to.

Ok set up console. Hope it works. This one doesn't shpow current ppd though, is there a way to do so ?

To check your PPD and monitor the client, you'll have to use HFM.NET.

Edit>Preferences>Web Settings. You'll need to put in your user name, team number, and EOC ID (the string of numbers at the end of your user page on the EOC folding stats website).

I did that. Didn't change anything, even after restarted it.

Yep, it updates the status daily (I think), or you can force a refresh at anytime using the menus.

H.

I figured it would update more often than daily. Can get my stats faster at hardfolding which updates more than just daily?

Even making changes to console and doing the 3 core thing. I'm still on target to complete in about 16 hours. Better than 3 days but. Doesn't seem worth the electricty use IMO

That is for you to decide if it is worth it to fold. Many people fold 24/7. It takes time to run these simulations.

The best stats website in my opinion is EOC, which updates every 3 hours.

Yeah i think checking that site once in awhile til=l i get things squared away is my best bet.

Thank you guys for all the continued help!

Is it recommended to fold using 3 cores on any quad core system?

Or just when folding with a video card? Or just when using the Windows SMP client?

I haven't folding in a while, and I don't recall that being a recommendation last time I folded.

It depends on the situation. Generally speaking, you should only go down to three cores if you are also folding on an ATI GPU. If you aren't, then you should use all four cores.

The general guidelines for thread counts, from what I've seen:
*Fold all cores if not using GPU folding
*One core per gpu if using an ATI gpu - i.e. -7 or -6 on a quad core i7 if you want to use 1 or 2 ATI cards
*One less than the available number of threads if folding with any number of nVidia gpus - i.e. -smp 7 on a quad core i7 if you want to fold on an nVidia card.

Hex cores with hyperthreading are an exception because -smp 11 isn't allowed - it causes problems with the units. In that case, you'd have to run -smp 10 even if you only wanted to run card.

That makes sense, thanks for the info. I misunderstood at first and set up my quads for 3 cores, but not they are correctly set to use all 4.

On another note I just got HFM.NET set up, and I notice on my remote box on my internal network, it shows "Standard" for the client. On the local computer it shows "SMP" for the client.

They are both running the SMP client though, why would it show the one as standard?

HFM.net should show you the parameters used to start each client. I think it's in the status bar at the bottom if you select the client. Make sure the -smp flag is being passed to the client that shows up as Standard.

They both show (-smp) in the status bar. Trying it on my laptop now to see what it shows as.
