Now that many people have played both games through their entirety, whats everyone's opinions on the games?

I think Doom 3 had slightly better graphics, but Half Life 2 was sooo much better gameplay wise. I beat half life 2 in two days, compared to the almost 2 months I took to beat Doom 3 because it became more of a chore than fun by the end of it. Some people might claim that HL2 was too long, but I think it was perfect in length. The ending might be a bit weak, but that last level was amazing enough for me.

Everyone else?

Edit: I understand that they are very different games, so you can't compare them exactly, but I was aiming more towards people selecting which would be their "Game of the Year."

HL2 in everything. yes even graphics, looks real compared to all the plastic look of D3

chalk one for half life 2, gmae play is so far ahead of doom 3. doom 3 has a slight advantage in graphics though.

I haven't ever played Doom 3. I even had D3 preordered and cancelled it the day it came out. I think that's a score for HL2

i'd say half-life 2 had better open-ended gameplay, but doom 3 had more theatrics, and better graphics.

but, ultimately, the huge problems with steam, gonna have to give the nod to doom 3 (and just to piss everybody else off.)

HL2 ownz Doom 3 just like I said in a post two dayz ago only 2 hours into it. Now I am at Nova Prospect and it is just rediculous how much better a game HL2 is vs. D3. You mentioned D3 being a chore to finish...I agree, I was bored to hell with the game and forced myself to finish it just for the sake of it (then sold it online). HL2 has me hooked; games like HL2 are the reason I am a PC gamer. I haven't felt amazed and hooked on a game in a long time...thats how I feel right now. Straight up, D3 was just glitz and glamour but HL2 is the real deal. DOD:S is gonna own as well...can't wait!

I refuse to get HL2 because of steam. Yes, I know I might be missing out on the best game at the moment, I dont care. Doom3 was ok, kinda boring, but will be fun when (if?) some mods are released. Plus its runs better in Linux than Windows. ;) I say Doom3.

Half Life 2 and DOOM 3 are both groundbreaking games in their own aspects - Half Life 2 for its revolutionary gameplay and AI, DOOM 3 for its graphics.

When it all boils down to the best, though, Half Life 2 easily takes the crown.

I thought the graphics of Doom3 were subpar. I wasn't impressed with the graphics or the gameplay, so I never beat it. I don't really see how people can say the Doom3 graphics are better than HL2's. I take SS in HL2 and wonder if they're real and can't say the same about Doom3.

HL2 in everything but grahpics [sorry, you can say you PREFER HL2s graphics as do I but no one in their sane non-biased can say that are technically superior] and presentation [D3 had practically no bugs, HL2 has hordes and hordes of them, and steam is a fucking joke].

I just remember watching Alyx climbing a ladder in Eli's base and I was taking a good close look at how her shadow moved and looked. Freaking fugly, D3 spoiled me, but now every other game I play has shittastic shadows.

You see that thing called a DOOR [to the outside world]. Try using it sometime.

doom ran a whole lot smoother half life needs a patch for thr sound stutter and vid stutte, the air boat scene proved how buggy the engine seems to be .

Finally someone pulls their head out. Doom 3's graphics are not that good in my opinion. The textures just arent high quality. The charachter models are good, but a lot of the textures, if you shine your flashlight on then, look like 128x128 low quality jpg's. Not once have I been like "damn look at these graphics!" while playing doom3. As soon as I started half life I was nearly pissing my pants at how good and fluid AND realistic the graphics were. Not to mention gameplay.

HL2 is better in every way.. yes, including graphics. When you consider graphics, consider all the environments along with it. Doom3 was the same crap over and over. Just walk outside and look at the city skyline in HL2 and you'll know why it's much better.

I'll never buy another id game sight unseen. The Half Life games from Valve have been consistently awesome.. even with some bugs..

I agree for the most part with all of you. Doom 3 has was technically superior, but the gameplay just sucked ass. I never even got to around half done, it was so fucking boring. HL2 on the other hand, the gameplay is ridiculously good, but Doom 3 has the graphics beat, along with the "presentation", as someone else said. Was anyone else dissapointed with the HL2 water? I think Far Cry water looks alot better. It almost looks like the water in HL2 was moving at 15fps.

I don't think that the graphics in Doom 3 were better, I think that the lighting engine was. There is no comparison model wise though, as HL2 takes the cake. The doom 3 models just look like they are made of play-doh. In his video address at quakecon, Carmack even commented on how the models didn't come out how he wanted them too, but it was too late to do anything about it.

If you walked up to anyone with no prior knowledge of these games, showed them these screenshots and asked which has better graphics, what do you think they would choose? Both were taken at 16x12, 8X AF, 4xAA.

Also, to the guy about the water, I dont know what kind of machine your running, but my water looks unbelievable! Far Cry's water is good, I'll give you that, but the look and especially the physics of the water in HL2 is unsurpassed.

And yes I know this doom shot is not the greatest, but I think if graphics are supposed to be "good" they should look good close up. Like I said I do think the charachter models in D3 look great, everything else marginal.

It also depends on what video card you have as well, whether it is geared toward a certain type of engine.

On similar settings, Doom 3 ran worse off than HL-2. But then again I have ATI.

Perfectly made points.. Just look at that HL2 SS, and it's as close to photo-realistic as we've had in a game yet. There are even better shots you can take inside the city. I also agree with you about Far Cry as well. I run both games in 16x12 and FC has a more cartoon look to me, and it's quite saturated.

I suppose in some ways, it could be a persons preference, but if you did stack screen shots next to each other, and ask an average person that knows nothing about the games, which one is better, they'd probably pick the HL2 shots every time.

I agree with everything you just said.

Hmm, how can you say that? ...unless you walk up that close to a wall in HL2 and take a screenshot. I'm sure it will look just as blurry.

I'm sure you could also take a screenshot standing next to a wall in HL2 and take one from a distance in DOOM 3 and say the same thing...that HL2 looks like ass and DOOM 3 looks awesome(to someone with no prior knowledge of the games).

It's nothing to do with my rig... I never drop below 40fps with everything on high or whatever. I will say HL2, overall, looks more real, it's just when you're up close to water in HL2, it almost looks like an animation. Far cry doesn't look like that to me.
Conclusion: HL2 water is beautiful if you're not real close up and staring down at it. Maybe I take back the "far cry water looks better" statement.

Would I have anything to compare it to if I didn't get outside? Hell, I bet you play more games and spend more time on the computer than I do. Stop trying to be smart online because you sound like a little kid that got beat up in school.

OMFG YUOR RIGHT DUM3=TEH ROXOR GRAFIX OMG WAY BETTER THEN THIS HL2 SHOT!!!!111111

Still waiting for someone to prove me wrong on Doom3's graphics.

Being a big ID fan, and have played doom(s), quake, quake 2, and ( still play ) quake 3 to the point of exhaustion, I went out and bought Doom 3 as soon as I could. Wow, what a mistake. Both my girlfriend and I beat Doom 3 in no time, and were pretty bummed. My girlfriend who beat Farcry said she had WAY more fun playing Farcry than Doom 3.

Now Half-Life 2 is out and I just started the mines level. Let me tell you that so far my experience in this game has blown away Doom 3. Im already looking forward to playing through it again once I finish this time. I loved Farcry single player, but I can say that HL2 is better, and Im not even far into the game!

Graphics wise.... no, texture wise, half-life 2 is superior. The feel and looks of the walls, ground, water, objects just blow away Doom 3. With the physics of HL2 over doom3, it makes the envionment look and feel even more spectacular... Doom 3 didn't have any outdoor levels, and its goal wasn't the realism like HL2 needed, so its hard to compare that way.

Doom 3 scared me many times.. I let it scare me, playing in the dark and going slowly, using headphones with the sound cranked etc... but so far in Half-life 2, Im just drawn in by the story and scripted sequences. I just finished the old town chapter where that crazy preacher with a massive shotgun keeps popping up and leading you around, and I was pretty scared going through that. It wasn't the annoying anticipation of waiting for some hell spawn to jump out at you like in Doom 3, but scary, and suspenseful in an exhilarating way! Plus at the end following that dude while he kept talking while fighting was awesome!! I felt like I was now taking second seat to this guy, but I was still remaining very active in the progression of the level. That whole chapter I had a smirk, if not grin on my face the whole time ... I mean, I've said before that so and so game is like playing a movie, but fuck those games, because after playing Halflife 2, I feel like Im participating in an interactive movie, and the characters are so life like and they too interact with the same things you do, not like in Doom 3 where its just some tard sitting there telling you some blah blah then you move on... or you watch them talk in a room then its back to just you again. I haven't experienced the teamates yet in HL2, but Im sure I won't be disapointed with that part...

My vote : Half-Life 2 >> Doom 3

p.s. I even had to nuke my computer to get Half-Life 2 to work, and sat through 3, countem, 3 re-installs of the game, and 2 re-downloads of the game just to get it working, plus all the steam bs like unlocking and not being able to connect etc... The game crashes randomly still on my other computer, but even after all of this, I would do it again now I know just how enjoyable this game has been.

Still waiting for someone to prove me wrong on Doom3's graphics.

Can you act any more less civilized?

And in my opinion that shot doesn't look all that hot either. I do stand corrected that the close up of DOOM 3 may be worse, but that shot of HL2 is nothing to brag about either.

EDIT: And from the way you replied, you sound like just another biased HL2 f a n b o y(for some reason they censored that word).

OH and btw, look at the HL2 ground/floor in that shot you gave. Looks like ASS to me. Then again so does the wood.

doom3's graphics are far superior. HL2's are on par with quake3 with a few exception of some run of the mill shaders.. Doesnt stop it from looking great though.

so why don't you compare them on equal terms idiot. Show a close up in HL2 and it will look even worse.

Doom3 graphically perhaps was to "clean" ...if that makes sense

while HL2 has a dirty gritty more lifelike quality to it

Doom3's water looks better tho ...... errr ..yeah

seriously tho , Far Cry has HL2 beat in the water hitting the shore department and graphically its kinda like comparing a cartoon with an animated movie ..well , that's kinda how I see it anyways.

HL2's water looks fabulous ..providing your looking at it from the right distance ..

Far Cry and Doom3 looked pretty similar to me .

I am pretty disapointed in how HL source turned out ...was expecting alot more I guess

..anyhoo ... another vote for HL2

Give me a fucking break. You take a screenshot 2 inches from the wall in D3 and put it up against a normal shot from HL2, who do you think you are kidding. Stand up against a wall in HL2 and take the shot if you want to compare the texture quality, moron

Graphics : 1 minute of entertainment.
Gameplay : The entire game of entertainment.

Having both be pretty damn good makes it an awesome game.. right?

HL2 Wins.

I think that guy officially left the thread. We shoved back to him the own shit he tried to force feed us.

And I think we have all proven you wrong, kre.

The thing is most of Far Cry water = Ocean (meant to hit shore) water, whereas most of Half Life 2 water = more 'lake and dam' (NOT meant to hit shore) water, so while yeah FC's shoreline may have been better, in HL2 they were not going for that 'shoreline' look.
So that point is moot imo.

then explain driving that buggy along presumably an ocean or a seriously large body of water, large enough to harbor barges and require lighthouses.

OK, well I should have included that it was part of the atmosphere for HL2.
Waves and whatnot are fine for a hawaii like atmosphere, which are fine for FC. HL had a more retro atmosphere, in which the stillness of the water suited it more.

I'm not saying either is better, just that the HL2 water was more suited for HL2, whereas FC water was more suited for FC.
If I had to choose though, I'd say HL2 water was more realistic, FCs water was a bit too perfect, which gave it a cartoony sort of feel, although it was visually awesome.

These threads are fucking worthless. Why do people even try comparing the two games, is it some part of nerd existence that makes it impossible to acknowledge co-greatness?

They're both good games.
They both appeal to different segments.
Comparing the two is pointless, as there will always be people who will prefer one over the other.

God.

You are so fucking right. Doom3 is aimed at being a scary homage to the original with uber friggin graphics. And it does the job perfectly.
I mean seriously I have both games and love both games. I haven't seen any bosses in Half-life2 that come close to looking as good as any of the boss creatures in Doom3. I mean seriously I have a 6800 and it looks so good its just jaw dropping. The only area that Half-life2 graphically does a better job is the facial animations thats it.

Now as to the gameplay ... Half-life2 doesn't scare me. And it wasn't intended to. Doom3 was and it did. Half-life2 is a sci-fi action/adventure.
And it does the job very well. One thing though.. Yes its alot easier then Doom3. Now some are trying to suggest that they took forever to beat Doom3 because it was boring? Bullshit Most folks who did take time to beat doom3 did it because we wanted to enjoy the experience of getting the shit scared out of us. And because my heart couldn't take it after playing for an hour.

Half-life2 after playing doom3 is so easy its ridicolous I am not complaining but so far wow I mean I went through 70% of the game in only 6 hours of playing. And I was playing with difficulty set to standard not easy. I wish the game was longer. But as doom3 .. Thats what mods are for I guess. :)

Next thing you know someones is going to come in and compare Diablo2 to Baldur's gate2 its a stupid comparison and not at all valid.

Enjoy both games.

hl2 is much more interesting and less repetitive

so many different things to do in hl2!
