HL2 Requires Internet Connection to Activate.

wow! thats a superb idea! lets screw the ppl w/o net connections!

Who doesn't have an internet connection nowadays... I mean seriously... I don't see why everyone is making such a big deal out of this.

some ppl dont, and might wanna play hl2. plain and simple.

of course we can sit here and say... "well i have one, so what?"

If they dont have an internet connection, they can just unplug their phone, and dial-up on trial AOL!!

i think it s a bad idea....some people dont have internet, like my friend . his parents r trying to keep him and his sister's free from the evils of the internet like chats and porno.......

and the evil that is video game addiction...
...at least in this case potential HL2 addiction.

well you need an internet connection to get the cracks...

But that wasn't the issue. The reason why you need an Internet connection is to authenticate your copy of the game; obviously pirates need to get around this or their download is ruined. :p

What about college students behind firewalls that block certain ports? There will be a crack, guaranteed.

It would mostly likely be just HTTP authentication. So college firewalls will probably not affect it.

What about those people who might want to play Half Life 2 but whose rig isn't powerful enough to play it? Or those who would like to play it but can't afford to buy it? If a modem is listed among the system requirements, along with the 1Ghz+ processor, the 356Mb+ RAM and the 64Mb+ Direct X version-whatever graphics card then I don't see we have much cause for complaint. How much would a bog-standard PCI modem cost? $3? $5? Is this really any less of an obstruction than the cost of upgrading the CPU/memory/graphics card to be able to play the game? Buy a cheapy second-hand modem, activate the game with a 'no ties' Internet account, sell the frickin' modem if you want your money back. If you don't have the requisite spec to play the game...tough luck! If you don't have a modem required to play the game...tough luck!

- Underpowered rig = lost sale
- No modem to activate game = lost sale
- Are Valve not losing out as much as the potential buyer here?

As for jumping through hoops, do Valve not have a right to protect their investment in any way they can? If people don't think the game will be worth their while logging onto the Internet for a few minutes for then they don't have to buy it. Again, just another lost sale for Valve.

I totally agree that pirates will always be able to find their way around any copy protection system. It may seem futile initially, but the copy protection systems must have a significant impact. I'm sure pirate software would be far more widespread if it were dead easy to simply copy the original disks. Is it really 'easier' to get hold of a pirate copy (i.e. finding it in the first place, not to mention all the potential pitfalls of dodgy disks, no guarantee, waiting for it to be posted to you) than to simply pick up a copy from your local retailer and spend 2 minutes online activating it?

You've waited well over 18 months for the game to be released, you've spent God-knows-how-long waiting for it install from the disk to your computer, you've got to set up the frickin' controls/sound/video settings how you like them...is it really such a hardship taking a few moments to activate it?

Whats a computer good for without a net connection.
I like it, I like it alot.

Making high hoops is how they tell you

"we frown upon pirates"

even if people are going to pirate anyway.. you know how the company feels about it..

I think we all know the reason that most people are causing a hooplah about this, if you don't like it don't buy the game. It really is that simple.

Pirates will crack it, of course they will, but by obtaining that crack you are proving that you could have registered your copy anyway and that you are just one of the low down scum that doesn't want to pay for their games.

There are too many whiney ass prissy bitches on the internet whose sense of entitlement is so strong that they cannot see why they have to pay for anything, everything on their PC from Windows to Photoshop is stolen and now that companies are making it more difficult for them they don't like it.

There are so many complaints;
I haven't got internet access.
Even my Nan has and she doesn't have a $300 graphics card.

OOoo aren't you so leet. What are you going to do in 2 years when games are download only. It will happen.

I won't install Steam.
Ok, crack the install, then watch as you can't apply the patches without more cracks. in 6 months you'll have more crack than <insert standard yo mamma joke>

My mommy won't let me on the internet
And she lets you play first person shooters?

I have a dedicated games box
Yeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss, you go to all that trouble of having seperate PC's and never play games online.

heh. i think this is funny. they think that means someone won't make a crack. i'm yet to hear of a game that can't be/wasn't cracked. so why try this hard. this is more a pain to honest people than anything else. i have a netconnection(obvious), but i know a lot of people who dont. i live in the mountains and a lot of people either dont have a local dialup- or simply haven't because they haven't taken the plunge.

gg valve gg.

Personally, I don't like the whole internet connection requirement thing because it only gets worse after it all starts. For instance, Microsoft is now completely anal about their updates. I have a 56k that runs at 24k on a good day (I live waaaay out, so no DSL or cable available). You can order major things like XP SP2 on CD, but its a real hassle downloading some of these critical updates on a slow modem. In todays virus ridden world, you should update regularly. My point is that companies are relying on everyone having a fast connection. How many games come out with a million bugs and a 26 meg patch on their website 3 days after the game was released? Large downloads can take all night on a crappy connection, and you still risk getting cut off if you don't use some type of dowloading tool that allows you to resume. Luckily, I can download on my mother-in-laws DSL and store anything on my 3G portable HD, but there are some people that just have hell because they can't download the software patches they need to run smoothly.

AND FYI, I work at one of the largest companies that makes CDs and DVDs and I watched HL2 being made last week. I saw a disc 5, which I hope was the last, so I would guess a full install is going to take a few gig of HD space. Anyhow, now you know that it shouldn't be delayed again since the discs have finally been produced.

The UK is being a test lab for you guys, we are dvd only again. Just like Farcry.

That was the best arguement I've seen against online requirement, I agree it's going to suck for you when you haven't got a choice but to download everything.

All this means to me is that i'm going to send and recieve a few extra packets of information before I play half-life 2.

It seems like HL2 only wants to swap a couple packets MINIMUM with the steam servers in order to let you play the game. So those of you on dial-up shouldn't be bitching about the mere activation of the game. As long as you play HL2 in offline mode it shouldn't even want to download the latest updates either. I can't beleive there are areas of the United States more ass-backwards than Amarillo TX. My dad lives 20 miles outside of town and he can get broadband out in the middle of BFE via a Point to Point Wireless connection.

First of all, what kind of child will be able to play HL2? It's rated M for starters so that means little 12 year old Timmy won't be able to buy it at the big chain stores since most are carding now for those titles. And if you're over the age of 17, and you live with your parents who won't let you have internet....You've got problems. No doubt an internet connection will be in the system requirements, if you're bitching about 'net connection in system requirements I guess you should bitch about all the others too.

Well, this totally sucks for me and quite a few other people I know. I am currently deployed to afghanistan, and I was looking forward to play HL2. It was bad enough I was going to have to wait an extra 3-4 weeks to have it shipped out here, now it looks like I will have to wait until I get back in March to play. I might just have to resort to using a crack.

I really don't think going this route with games is a good idea, it's not going to stop the dedicated pirates, and current copy protection stops the casual pirater (burning copies for a friend, etc.). This seems a lot like WinXP activation to me. It will probably cause problems trying to load up on more then one computer i.e. Laptop and Desktop.

At the very least, they should have the option to call in and be activated that way. Just like you can with WinXP. As long as it doesn't require a touchtone phone, then all of us serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will at least be able to unwind after a hard day by shooting some alien scum :D

an internet connection is listed in the minimum requirements for the game. theres no use complaining about a minimum requirement you can't meet, the only solution is to upgrade. thats how it has always been

i expect HL3 to have finger print recognition and eye scanning in order to activate.
"Please insert rectina into cd, please." "Activiation failed, this game will self destruct in 5,4,3,2,1....." "O man i just paid 200 dollars for that game with Real Network ads in the background; damn.

QFE.

THAT is the reason why game companies make us run thru hoops. B/C of lamer pirate warez monkies who should be shot in the head...

Of course, the game's "KEY" will be tied to a STEAM ID most likely to authenticate...

Common ... really ...

If you dont have an internet connection, they should not let you buy HL2 in the first place. Its time to upgrade or go the way of the neanderthal.

secondly

if you are so paranoid about hackers / virii that you will not connect your gamming rig to the Internet. Grow up... you might wanna try this.

its not an option for a lot of people still. not everyone lives in cities. i'm lucky because i do. but i live in the middle of the mountains, and i promise there are a lot of towns around here that dont have dialup access yet, or that have to dial long distance.
only other option is sat. and i wouldn't want to go that route. *shrugs*

if there are gamers in these obscure towns, that meet all other minimum requirements, and that want to play hl2(and im sure there are thousands and thousands!), there is ALWAYS an option. as long as they have a phone line they can get a free aol cd, or other free dialup, make a onetime long distance call and activate hl2. total cost = 25 cents. they shouldn't expect things to be easy if they are living in the dark ages.

Fact is it is impossible to live in a non-internet place and have all the minimum system requirements to play HL2.

Having an internet connection is a minimum requirement.

So you just have to deal with it.

You only need the internet connection for installation. Once that is done your good.

How hard can it really be to get an internet connection for 5 minutes?

I imagine it could be pretty hard if you're on Mars, experiencing solar flares, and under attack by an alien race... unless you're in this situation installing the game should pose no problems.

Yes and if you are in that position you already have doom 3 to play anyway

... sure does suck tho
