HL2 Pulled From Shelves!!

Good, Vivendi can go to hell for all I care, i've got my HL2 backed up onto DVD and I don't need their greedy publishing asses to give me my games.

Ditto.

I wish all games would go the STEAM route.

Vivendi is worse then Satan.

We all say Vivendi can go to hell, but even Satan doesn't want them there. Vivendi is the worst thing to happen to the computer gamming industry.

What do you call 1000 Vivendi employees at the bottom of the ocean ???

A good start !

:D

Anyone who actually wanted it has already bought it by now anyway. HL2 sucked - That massive download just to play the game is a joke. Worse $50 I ever spent.

Sorry. :(

I just watched that movie on the weekend. Best movie ever.

Michael J. Fox for teh win.

HEY MCFLY!!

Well that really sucks for gamers with no broadband. I hope this is not the the future for any other games, that you can only get them via broadband. Also how is that you guys are coming down on Vivendi? Maybe I missed something but what did they do?

Well for starters they sued Valve for releasing the game over Steam, and then they directly sold the game to cyber cafes and kept all that revenue. This is the reason HL hs been yanked from shelves. Valve had Vivendi in a corner for basically pirating HL2 and selling it to cyber cafes, so the partnership was terminated.

Vivendi also forced out many top level people at Blizzard such as Bill Roper. The only original Blizzard people still working there are the artists, Metzen and Samwise. Everyone else quit Blizzard because they did not like how Vivendi conducted Business are the fact that they whore out every dev they can.

Oh and did I mention that they did so poorly on the other side of the ocean that they lost a whole bunch of money so they came over here and they have proceeded to try and ruin two of the best devs out there, Blizzard and Valve.

Awwww :( There were announcements in the steam forum about valve looking for another publisher to take over the physical distribution. But this article says otherwise. Exclusive Steam Distribution? Is it just the article saying that, or is it really what valve is going to do?

I believe it is exclusive to steam, until they find a new distributer.

Honestly what is Vivendi trying to do, they ruin there relationship with Valve, huge revenue loss, just think off the money lost for distributing addons for HL2.

But to top it off, they push the creators of Blizzard out of the company, and now Blizzard takes all the slack for releasing WoW before it was ready.

GG Vivendi

Please Die.

So how are they gonna find a different distributor? Would a new one come forward fully knowing that they wouldn't get much business because of steam? Or would Valve be the one looking for, and paying the new publisher to distribute their games?

Correct me if I am wrong but I remember reading awhile back that HL2 would be the last game published by Vivendi and there games after would be published by the Activision. No?

Ya Valve owed Vivendi a game, from what I remember. Half-life 2 was it tho. Your post just got me wondering tho ... are expansion packs for HL2 still considered part of that game ? or do they count as seperate games ?

I guess this will hurt Valve right now, but i think it's good for the future of games.

Well, now instead of paying $33 for a boxed game on sale somewhere, you can now pay $49.99 to get the bronze package off Steam.

It sucks for the people who wait for the price of the game to come down or go on sale. It's not like Valve will ever put HL2 on sale if it doesn't have any competition.

That's my gripe with it.

They'll find another distributer. No way they are going to rely on Steam alone. I have broadband and I don't like downloading my games and there are a lot of people like me. I like the boxes, printed cds, manuals, even the stupid ads that they sometimes come with.

Then I can have ten programs running in the background managing my games. :( I don't mind buying games in a store, I don't like online distribution.

I dont know about other people. But when I am not using a program such as steam, or playing Half-life 2, I close steam. Seams to me the only need to, launch steam, is to play any of the Valve catalogue .... but thats just me.

I think everyone does, the problem is, when you ARE playing a game, you have a program running in the background (a rather bloated program) and its a pain, plus, it uses up some net (slows it down) and is an all around paine

Am I the only one with offline mode for steam ?

That's true, but other games don't need any program at all to manage them. The best solution is a simple one for me, and that's not steam, so I guess I don't want other games to go that route.

No, I understand. If all game companies went this route it would suck to have a million different steam apps that you have to launch, close, etc.

Valve can go to hell for charging so much.

Retail version = 35-40 dollars
Steam base version = $50

I still have yet to play HL2 because I am waiting for the Silver price to come down so I can get HL Source and DOD but if they don't drop the price, I will buy a retail version before they pull them.

And VUG killed Tribes so screw them. I will never forgive them for that.

.

Vivendi did NOT force out those Blizz guys....they left because they hated the wyy Vivendi operated...still bad, but they *choose* to leave. They were never forced.

not a small semantic difference.

or perhaps.
"ok guys, you have two options. Be demoted to ???? or quit."
A friend was given that option at Best Buy and they refused to tell him why.

As for pulling the games off the shelf, I have this feeling that it will open a huge black market and piracy problem. Thus once again, the companies themselves ended up indirectly causing the piracy of their own products.

The truth is, Valve was required to keep the price of the Steam version the same as MSRP as to avoid unfair competition between them and their publisher. Now that Vivendi is out of the way, it is only logical that the price of the Steam version will come down.

Well as for Vivendi and Valve dong the splits...

Good for Valve.

As far as Valve games now to be Steam and other developers planning on using the online
distro route...

Oh crap. :(

But at least for Steam...you dont have the maze of patches for playing a game online and its
possible mods (i.e. BF1942 + DC + FH)

I like going to the store and buying it...I know when a game is first released Fry's will have a
sale that beats all other stores and there wont be any downed servers.

not me, my machine can't cope, but my new rig shoud by June. I want a box though, i don't want to buy something unless it's tangible, i don't trust steam

Ha...right

and in game advertising will lower the cost of games too. whatever.

(the rolly eyes aren't to you and not that your logical thinking is incorrect because it isn't. You'd (everyone) think it be that way. But it just isn't going to happen. Hence bring on retail)

It makes sense that they would have to keep it at a certain level as to not gouche out retail sales.

But I'm saying if Steam is the only place you can get HL2, why bother putting it on sale. They can say $49.99 or nothing. If you want it you'll buy it from them.

What brick&mortar store has it for $35-40?

We know how often that happens in monopolies. :D :D

There have been sales. I think gogamer had it for $35 at one time. Although it isn't a B&M store.

You don't HAVE to use steam if you don't want to.

There are ways around it.

But it makes it easier if you don't knwo the IPs
