HL2 on august 5th?

At this rate I might have another ATI card by the time HL2 is available. :p

lol...all bullshit aside though...HL2 is going to be a great game...and worth the exceptionally long wait

I honestly wouldn't care if HL2 was released August 5. I'll be playing Doom3 in August, and won't care if HL2 ever exists.

Maybe once I'm tired of Doom3, Far Cry, and Painkiller I'll care more about HL2.

How ironic...you buy an ATi card that comes with a game that doesn't show up until after you have switched back to the competition...

teehee

That is an interesting observation...but that's what I did!!

I didn't mean that in a bad way... seriously I don't know what will be in my system 2 months from now. Or that it will even be the same system.

Realistically, HL2 isn't going gold in 2 weeks. It might be ready for final testing in 2 weeks, but it's not coming out in August or September. It will do really well as long as it's out before the holidays and fine even if it misses (not likely). A game like HL2 has a lot to live up to and will not be rushed out just because of Doom3. I'd prefer it that way.

I certainly hope it doesn't. Between Halo2 and Doom3, I'll be too busy.

Who knows...they might be actually ready to release the thing. :p If it were any other game it would be a bad move to release it so close to Doom 3 but with HL2 people will buy it anyway (even if they have to go way over their monthly gaming budget ;) )

I plan on taking a vacation from the internet + real world starting August 3rd.

HL2 better not go Gold during that period.

Of course they will. Whoever made the Quake3/UT:Tourney comaprison above was spot on. People would buy both games, so if it is almost done Valve won't have to worry about delaying it to dodge Doom 3.

This is just an observation from when other games have gone gold, from what I have seen once the Game Dev announces the game has gone gold it normally takes about 2-3 weeks before the game shows up in retail stores.. It seems that once the game has gone gold the day before the game dev announces this they ship the masters out and from there takes 2-3 weeks till we see it... I cant wait to play DOOM3 and already pre ordered it BUT I have been waiting for HL2 since I beat HL1 and its my #1 spot of anticipated games..

Save yourself a day or two of vacation time, if you're spending it. D3 won't be in anyone's hands until the 4th or 5th of August, not on the 3rd.

"HL2 World announced that Half-Life 2 will be finished on August 5th: "Right now we are looking at our bug numbers. Each day you fix some bugs and you find some new bugs. The net number tells you how quickly you will get to zero. At our current rate of find/fix bugs, we'll be down to zero bugs in 16 days" (Gabe Newell from Valve Software). "

Hmm. Anyone else also doubt that quote came from Gabe? At any rate, anyone with experience will agree that that is no how software or games are developed/debugged. A countdown to "zero bugs in 16 days" just isn't how it happens, nor is it how developers/debuggers work. I actually laughed when I first read that.

Typically I've found that american games come out the day of their release while japanese games take a day or two.

Max Payne 2 came out on the day of it's release date, Oct 15th. I hounded the BB people until they let me into the wharehouse to pick up a copy. I plan to do worse for D3. :D

Yes, Gabe's statement makes no sense. It doesn't take into consideration new bugs that usually come up when fixing current ones, or that the easier bugs generally get fixed first and the harder ones later. I'll be surprised to see HL2 by the end of the year. Those guys have lied too much for me to believe anything they say.

I believe nothing Valve says.

When you look at the fucking mess Valve made with HL2 release announcements, vouchers etc...the whole "when it's done" mentality makes even more sense...

Never heard anyone crying about Doom3 release dates, because id never made any empty promises...

I bet that some people might have it the 3rd...

"Editor's Note: Activision later informed us that 10 select Best Buy stores, covering 6 markets -- Chicago, Washington D.C., Miami, Los Angeles, New York and Dallas -- will offer the game at 12:01AM on Aug 3 as part of a special midnight madness sale. We were unable to find out if any other stores will be conducting similar promotions."

Very bottom of page one.

So im guessing coffee sales are gonna go through the roof this next month And there is gonna be a world wide epidemic of insomnia

ROFL.....lol.....so true, and thx for saying it. Good stuff.

regardless of when valve completes hl2, vivendi knows not to release it anytime near doom3's release date. that would be unwise as it would hurt sales of both games. im guessing sep 30th as well. but i wouldn't be too suprised if it came out in november or december for the holidays

That's what I'm gonna be assuming for the next couple weeks also.....it just makes more sense. Whether or not both games are going to be HUGE success stories.....realeasing them that close togethor WILL hurt sales of both, whether you want to believe it or not some people actually have a hard time saving up for a single $60 PC game.....let alone two of them in one month.....and those people actually make up a VERY large portion of the market. I'm going with September for now, it makes more sense if you stop for more then 10 seconds and think things through logically and realistically.

in the end though it doesnt really matter....anyone with a half decent comp is own BOTH games...

Not true.....I know QUITE a few people who are very strongly anti-Valve or anti-Id for whatever reason. My job isnt to understand their ways, just to take no more then a second look and pass 'em by. Don't get me wrong, there WILL be hell of a lot of people with both games, but I've got a funny feeling that there's going to be just as many people with only one or the other, for whatever reason. Honestly, even if both games were released in the same week I would only buy ONE of them right away. I'm the kind of guy that likes to have a dozen different games installed at once to choose from, but when a blockbuster hit like this is released I do NOT like having another alternative.....I want to be able to completely immerse myself in Doom3's scares for a good while before I even think of getting in HL2's story, and I have a good feeling that there'll be quite a few more ppl like me with that same pov.

On a side note, why the hell is this in the video cards forum?

Hah, no kidding.....none of the points being brought up are even somewhate video card related.....oh well, I guess this IS a very high traffic area of the forums.....so this way more potential hardware buyers will keep in touch with what's going on.

Just in time for me to go back to school.

Wow, that has to suck, I seem to be forgetting that with all this September release talk.....there are a lot of [H]ard members hittin' the books again.....ah well, you'll all find ways to make time for it, and don't you deny it. Priorities people, its all about priorities. ;)

I just like to know how their servers are going to hold up with all the people with ATI vouchers trying to download the game at once. I have a feeling a lot of people with vouchers will be buying the retail game because they don't want to wait.

That will surely be an interesting scene.....and I'm hoping that my good ol' coupon comes through in the end. For me it wont be an issue of downloading the game.....but moreso waiting in line or catching things at the right time, as to get more then 20kb/s on the download. ;) I'm sure that Valve has set themselves up quite well on the server side of things in time for the release, they're fully aware how many of us still have our coupons pinned to our walls ( ;) ) and they wouldnt want to let us all down AGAIN now would they? :p

lol...all bullshit aside though...HL2 is going to be a great game...and worth the exceptionally long wait

I second that, and I can hardly wait to finally put my machine to work this fall.

Couldnt they go Gold, but not announce it to the public? I think it would be funny if they already had things ready to go and they shipped it and released it a day before D3 that would be the greatest thing in the world muahahah... i dont plan on playing either one... unless someone gives me a copy to play at a LAN party... so i think some DRAMA would be GREAT!!!

i check the shipping computers at my work and i would see that if it had a date within 3 weeks unless they rush them out real quick.

I'm not going to hold my breath on this one...I'll be excited when I hear it has gone gold.

Well it depends. Here in south Texas it is summer about 10 of the 12 months.... :D :D
Rochester has two seasons: winter and construction. Construction lasts at most 5 months.
