"HL2 World announced that Half-Life 2 will be finished on August 5th: "Right now we are looking at our bug numbers. Each day you fix some bugs and you find some new bugs. The net number tells you how quickly you will get to zero. At our current rate of find/fix bugs, we'll be down to zero bugs in 16 days" (Gabe Newell from Valve Software). This statement means that Half-Life 2 should reach the Gold status in the very near future. Thus, considering that Doom III will hit the store shelves on August 5th (what a coincidence!), it seems that the next month will be truly a hot one."

So im guessing coffee sales are gonna go through the roof this next month  And there is gonna be a world wide epidemic of insomnia :p

august 5, sounds like someone is trying to steal doom 3's thunder. I predict a september 30th release.

seems to me like it is about time that they finished that game up. i think that it is pretty reasonable to say that they could be done within that timeframe. but then again i was counting the days till sept 30 last year too  so maybe thats just wishful thinking :)

rofl - true

regardless of when valve completes hl2, vivendi knows not to release it anytime near doom3's release date. that would be unwise as it would hurt sales of both games. im guessing sep 30th as well. but i wouldn't be too suprised if it came out in november or december for the holidays

Well didn't Valve say it was going to be done in "Summer", well when does "Summer" Technically end?

summer is - july august september (well obviously not the full months btu it's easier just to say it like this)

I have no doubt that Valve won't miss the opportunity to announce that it's almost ready to ship right around the time Doom hits shelves, but as for the actual game..

It would actually be the 28th, because most games release on a Tuesday and the calendar is 2 days different since we are 1 year into the future. But by the time it hits most store shelves, it would be Sept 30th.
Once they finish the game, it still has to be approved by the publisher, go gold, and then we wait 3 weeks before it ships.
I agree, they midas well just make it Sept 28th.

I think the bug estimate wont play out as nicely as they think. And there is no way in the world that date could be true, they may go gold on august 5th, but I really doubt it.

Not to mention they must test the so called "bugless" version to ensure that it really is.

Nobody would ever hear if it was finished on the 5th through all the Doom 3 release stuff.

What?? Trust me, if Half Life 2 goes gold then everyone will hear about it, Doom 3 or not. You may be a big id fan who doesn't really care about HL2, but I for one look forward to both titles. I mean damn, can you imagine 2 of the most anticipated games ever being released a month apart. If they even live up to half of the expectations then it'll all be worthwhile.

I'm also curious to see Doom's multiplayer mode and CS:Source.

Well it depends. Here in south Texas it is summer about 10 of the 12 months.... :D :D

Call me a fool, but I think it's very possible that they're two weeks from completion. After all, they've been working on this game for how many years now? It was supposed to be done and released almost a full year ago. After an extra year of testing and development they have to be near completion...right?

I would agree. At (or at an interview after) E3 2004, Newell said HL2 was done and that they were just fixing bugs and running the game through as many playtests as possible. He really put forth an id-ish frame of mind with this whole "it's done when it's done" thing while also conveying that it was very close to completion.

On a side note, why the hell is this in the video cards forum?

Im also want both games, and i can't wait!
I guess a lot of people need/want new cards so they posted in here....

If Newell finishes engine bugs by August 5, they still need play testing and other QA before it can go Gold. I'd be surprised if it's available on Steam or retail shelves before October at this rate.

I'd like it to come out since I got it free already from an ATI card I bought.

Let's all keep fingers crossed they don't gett ripped off yet again....I'll wait until I see the first box on the shelf before I get all excited....

it'll see the light of day when DNF does...
:p C'mon, HL2 is nearing the end of development and DNF is a second priority project at 3DRealms and just had yet another engine change. You can't compare the state of the 2.

I'm still skeptical because Newell did lie last year about the game almost being finished when it obviously wasn't and also blaming the code theft on the delay. The code theft wasn't the main reason, but it was a (small) factor of course.

Mmmmm...Coffee. :D

I just like to know how their servers are going to hold up with all the people with ATI vouchers trying to download the game at once. I have a feeling a lot of people with vouchers will be buying the retail game because they don't want to wait.

Boy, downloading like 3 Gigs for a game off the internet would suck, especially when a lot of other people are already playing it. Maybe Steam will let you preload it for like 2 weeks (and implement the grayed out network usage option).

How ironic...you buy an ATi card that comes with a game that doesn't show up until after you have switched back to the competition...

Assuming it was released within a month or so of D3, it would be like the release of Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament. Both titles came out around the same time, and everyone I knew bought both of them. They were both good for different reasons, but appealed to the same general audience. I could see that happening again with D3 and HL2. I'll be buying both. I'm a bigger fan of Id though, so I preordered D3. I'll just pick up HL2 in the store.

At this rate I might have another ATI card by the time HL2 is available. :p

Actually I got a Radeon 9600se for my wife's computer a while back and got the free voucher.
