I purchased the retail version today and whadyaknow... it won't install.

I get almost through the third desk when I get a "1305" error for the sounds.gcf file. It asks me to verify that the file is there and gives me the option to "retry" or "cancel" the installation. I've done both. Retrying simply start installing the disk (or that file) over again but ends in the same result. Clicking cancel terminates the entire installation project which requires you to start from disc 1 again. Here's a screenshot of the error message...

I've checked the cd and I didn't notice any scratches. I also monitored the file size for the file in question. It does in fact change throughout the install but ultimately ends up at 0k.

I really don't know what else to do. I would love to return the game tomorrow for a refund and purchase via Steam instead. Does anyone know what CircuitCity's return policy on computer games is? It will have been less than 25hrs since I made my purchase... :(

Exchange for another copy. Is a file corruption on disc 3.

Thanks for the info. I'll definately do that. I'm hoping everything will work after that because I'm sure CircuitCity won't even give me store credit for a software return.

Are you trying to install HL2 without CS:S? I had a similar problem...the install would crash every time on disc 4. As soon as I stopped unchecking the CS:S install portion, it installed just fine.

Apparently the thing needs something from the CS:S files and the guys that built the installer didn't test installing HL2 without CS:S.

No. I think i truly have a bad disc. It's like it would attempt to get the sound file from the disc but tank half way through and give the file a size of 0K. I went ahead and bought it through Steam. I'm going to take this copy back and exchange it for a new one and give it to my brother as an early Christmas present. :D
