hitachi sata problems..

bought a couple hitachi 80 gig sata drives 7200 RPM and seem to have nothing but problems with them... have had data corruption, horrible performance and I dunno if it could be the sata controller making it do it or not but it'll "click"....

i've got an
athlon xp 2200+
Abit an7 board
512 ddr 2700
2 x 80gig hitachi drives
on board sata controller...


any help would be appreciated! thanks in advance!
 
How many watts does it provide on +12, and what all else in your system may pull on +12, such as a video card with a molex, fans, lights, other drives?
 
are you sure its not the 'meowing' that hitachi drives make, my 160gb drives make this noise and its normal for hitachi drives.
 
DVD burner, 8x80mm fans(cpu, side pannel, front etc)

I wouldn't build a gaming system with under 16A. My PSU has 28A.
 
eh i dont hear anything that sounds like an actual "meow" but it'll just happen outa no where and its like a quick click that almost drags on?

ok, thats not the meowing sound, it would have literally sounded like kittens inside your computer if it was. try reseating the molex power connector and make sure its snug in there.

about the psu, im not trying to crap on your hardware but that is not a very good psu. my old antec 350w had 16A on the +12v. if you got some extra cash, id be worth it to buy a brand name psu.

everybody has their preference, i bought an antec cause my case is an antec.
 
No video card with molex? (ie, it relies on the power available through the slot?) Even so, 14A on +12 doesn't go very far - your CPU is probably pulling half of it, and that 14A is probably for 25C inside the PSU, and it is going to get 40C inside under load. An optical drive will pull another amp, and the fans puts together are another 1 amp. Your hard drives are going to be another amp as well, at least - 10 amps on +12 altogether - I'd expect that an air temperature of 45-50C inside (45C = 113F, which is quite likely given the low efficiency of generic PSUs), and the higher temps mean less current can be provided to your equipment. Head over to the PSU forum and read their stickies to see about a quality replacement for it. Your system is still rather modest - one of the TruePower series Antecs that come up fairly often in FS/T or a new Fortron would be plenty for you, and would most likely eliminate your problems, for less than $80

I'm using a Y sata adapter for the power came with my m/b but these can take either molex or the sata power... and whats a good brand? this one came with my case(not like most wouldnt already know that)

I got a 80gig 7K250 and it was total bullshit. it was really slow and made alot of noise. I rma'd it to where i bought it from and apparently they had alot of problems with drives made in october 2004. Just thought i'd mention since my problems sound about the same as yours.

My new one was made in december and its a beast
 
place i got it from is given me hassle(was a heck of a deal from a "mom and pop shop" ) some "snooty" kid runs it... mom and dad just fund it... anyway... complains i need to just RMA it to hitachi... i wouldnt mind it so much if this was an online deal but in person you think you'd wanna take better care of your customers......
