Hitachi RMA opened external drive

Has anyone ever dealt with Hitachi's RMA process. I have a 3tb xl3000 drive that just went bad. Problem is it's an external drive, and I took it out of it's case, breaking the warranty seal. Should I just send the bare drive in, like it has been an internal drive the entire time, or put it back in the case and hope they don't notice the broken seal?
The good news is, I bought two of these pre-flood for $80, the bad news is, I might have an $80 paper weight.

Ive RMA'd the bare drive from a WD external before. Might as well try, mine had a different serial number for the drive and the enclosure.

Might as well try to RMA it but don't expect a whole lot. You never know though, the inspector could be hung over.

I was told by their technical support that they will reject warranty support for any drive that has been opened. I checking into it after getting into an argument on Slickdeals with a guy who said that it didn't matter. They supposedly have serial numbers of the drives that go into the enclosures and the drives are marked as OEM or "from other equipment".

You could always try to kiss ass a little and see if they might be willing to make an exception for you. That's probably your best bet.

Yea, I might call, and hopefully find someone having a good day in Tech support. I just didn't know if sending it in bare would work or not.

The actual drive has a longer serial number than the enclosure but the last 8 digits match. I really don't know what to do.

Although maybe dishonest, I would send it in. If the drive is broken you have nothing to lose, although I wouldn't of made a thread about it on an googleable forum. Plausible deny-ability and all that ;)
