anybody currently own a fairlynew hitachi/IBM hard drive? There is a good deal on them locally, but I do not know about there reliability.
 
I've used a couple of Hitachi laptop drives recently and haven't had any problems with them. I can't speak for their desktop models though.
 
Their desktop and mobile lines are about average in reliability. Previous models from IBM, not Hitachi, were failure-prone, but they got to the bottom of those problems, and it's been several years since they released a product of questionable reliability. Besides, their overall performance is very good compared to most of their competitors, and their thermal and acoustic performance are better than most.
