So I'm using the eMachines m6811 laptop in the sig, watching an AVI movie from my HD, while also DLing files at about 140k/s. I notice a little pause in the movie and check my computer, everything is extremely slow. Both download and movie are from the same HD.

Then it happens, I hear a loud click come from the HD holder, followed by a scratching sound. Anything involving disk activity takes about 5 mins to work. Opening a browser, task manager, NOD32(managed to disable and speed increased slightly). Whenever I try to backup a file it gets a little way into the transfer and the HD starts clicking and scratching like a mofo and the bar stops moving for a few minutes. Then an error message pops up telling me access violation.

I manage to get a few smaller files backed up and restart the computer. Voila, it works, albeit a bit slow. No weird HD noises at all. I manage to backup my files (very slowly), and find that some files I tried to transfer before are currupt.

Now here is a twist, at the time of problems, my memory was OCed to 400MHz from 300, also 1T from 2T. I also had the cpu voltage at 1.3v. Could this have been a cpu or memory error instead of a HD error? I've been running the memory OCed and CPU undervolted from time to time when I needed extra performance and less heat. I tried these settings in the restarted computer and they worked fine too.

I guess the HD clicking means it's a HD problem, I've had the drive functional for a good while without any problems. It has commuted to an external enclosure from time to time. So is this a HD rma or is this my stupidity OCing a laptop?
 
When Ice Czar gets back on, he will no doubt link you to Corruption 101. It is entirely possible that your data was read successfully off the disk, then got corrupted as it passed through your OC'd system RAM to the backup destination.

If it is available to you, I would try the drive outside the notebook in an enclosure or desktop ATA adapter. Also, of course you need to revert to BIOS defaults for all of your system clock speeds - there may be weaknesses in your power supply system that is leaving the hard drive on the outside during your OC adventures. I am not an expert on notebook power design and requirements - someone else will have to help you here, and I will watch and learn.

However, things don't look good for the drive and the data on it. Also, remember that Hitachi does not have advance replacement warranty service - you will be without a drive for at least a week if you send it back.
 
Thanks for the advice. The laptop bios is basically useless, I overclocked by using clockgen and A64Tweaker. And the 1week is not a problem since I still have my old 80gb 4200rpm drive in an enclosure. I was thinking that the data somehow got corrupted in the OC'ed ram, but them I thought of the clicking and scratching and how the drive was slower.

I have backed up all of my data (which wasn't too important since I back up everything to my external 400gb frequently) and have proceeded to install windows again. The installation is slower than it should be, looks like either my ram or HD is going.

Does anyone know if the clicking and scratching can occur on a healthy drive? It has never clicked and scratched before, and it just did for a long period of time when there was drive activity. It has however made a soft buzzing noise which was strange to my ears many times in the past. No other HD I've had has done that.

I guess I'll just wait for Ice Czar to set me straight and tell me if the click/scratch can happen on a good drive.
 
Update: Ran Hitachi's error program and it detected an error in SMART. Currently in the process of RMA the drive. What is the UPS shipping process?
 
Use Hitachi's packing instructions and use a carrier that provides tracking information.

If you are shipping UPS, you'll get the best rates if you go to one of the UPS Customer Centers next to the local hubs. Places like MBE are a rip-off. Use this link to find a UPS Customer Center near you - depending on your location, there may not be one local to you.

You can also just go to the Post Office :p
