Well I guess this was my dumb fault, but i took apart my card to give it a good cleaning, When i got the heatsink off I noticed that it wasnt held on by the standard thermal past. It seemed like these thermal pads... but anyways, they were all covered in dust and got all messed up when trying to take them off. When i put it back together I tried to use a liberal amount of thermal past to make up for it, but its just not cutting it. When ever i try to play games like Grid or Sims 3 the the computer locks up, It does the same when I run the ATI auto clock program. Is there any where to buy the proper thermal pads? Any help is welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Too much thermal paste is bad and will inhibit heat transfer. To coin the phrase from the anti-smoking commercials, you need the "Magical Amount". Not too much to hurt, but just enough to be effective.

Did you mount everything back as flush as possible and snugly?

A little dust on the thermal pads (guessing for the vrm/mosfet at the back of the card) really shouldn't hurt anything, but they can be cleaned with a small amount on isopropyl alcohol and a lint free rag, just damped the rag and give them a quick rub down, let them dry fully for like 20 minutes before re-installing.

Also.. you put silicon compound on top of thermal pads??????? srsly?

Yep.

Too much thermal paste can actually decrease heat transfer efficiency. This is an example where more is not necessarily better. Clean your video card again, then apply a tiny amount of thermal paste (small grain of rice), then use something stiff but flexible to spread it out (like a credit card).

Worst case scenario, use thermal pad instead. May not be as good as properly applied thermal paste, but you don't need to measure.

Sorry for the confusion but, I tossed the thermal pads, I started fresh with the thermal paste, not doubled up :p And the reason i had to put so much paste on was that even with all the screws fully tightened the paste didnt make a good connection. The heat sink is held out a bit to for for normal use, I tried and the video card was worse then it is now.

Thanks for the link! Im going to order a few right meow.
