HIS 7970 Buzzing?

Hey all

I just replaced my Two 6950's with a nice new 7970 from HIS.

But unlike my 6950's which had a VERY quiet buzz (had to have ear close) this has a very loud buzz which i can hear from across the room.

My PC is silent, and is also silent most of the time in games and the 7970 has destroyed that silence that i love.

Does anyone know of any Extension cables i can use that will reduce any power flux that may be causeing this whine?

(before anyone asks about the PSU, its an XFX 1000w PRO Platinum PSU and can not be the cause)

Or should i take the WC block off, put it back to stock and send it all the way back to OC UK for a replacement?
 
If its buzzing under high load, then that's normal. Mine does that and it depends on the frames per second. Mine only noticeably does it when the frames shoot up really high at main menu screens. If yours is doing it at idle then I say something is wrong.
 
Is it the reference or Iceq?

I ask because the Iceq version is claimed to have solid chokes, which shouldn't whine. But hey, if you say they whine, then there goes that theory! :)

Mines the Bog standard Refrence version.

It buzzed when browseing websites under the scrolling action and in any game.

It shouldnt happen, my 6950's didnt do it

I have two HIS 7970 IceQ X2. No coil whining.
 
Well. the 6950's are back in, No buzzing again :D

The 7970 is in the process of haveing its stock cooler put back on and awaiting RMA number :D
 
I'm real sorry to hear that. I feel for you. I'm sending back my Sapphire 7970 OC (2nd time now) for the same reason; it just does not feel good to have spent this much to have silence and performance, only to have annoying whine.

But I'm also grateful to hear that it was only the reference model that did that, because I'm getting the Iceq instead :D Hopefully the part about solid chokes not whining holds up, because I still like the 7970 a lot more than the 680.

Well the retailer tried to tell me that all new graphics cards make this noise and its perfectly normal...

I simply said no they dont and i will keep returning them untill i get a silent one :p
 
my 4890's did the same, not from the start though.

coil whine in any application that used gpu acceleration. In the end the coil whine got worse and started happening when scrolling down websites.

Not harmful afaik, just annoying.
 
This was the prime reason I opted for a GTX 670 and returned my unopened Sapphire 7970 to Amazon. There were simply too many reports of choke whining for my comfort level. Similar or close performance for $70 less and no choke buzz. I was a bit sad because I'm somewhat of a Radeon fanboy, but it just wasn't worth taking the chance this round.

Unless you get a 7970 with NON reference chokes, it will whine under load. Good luck.
 
I don't know anything about liquid cooling, but a quick search on coolingconfigurator shows 1 of the 2 7970s with solid state chokes (the HIS Iceq x2) has a block, while the other (MSI Lightning) still doesn't have one.

The 680 ASUS DirectCU uses solid state chokes, but I don't know about the 7970.

Granted, I'm still waiting on my IceQ x2, and this is all dependent on whether having the billed solid state chokes is a guarantee against coil whine, or not. It might even just be marketing bull, who knows.
 
I heard that the MSI Lightning is indeed getting a block. I would go with that card if possible. It will have high quality chokes.
 
I was sure that theese ones on the 7970 were solid ones tho.

Any way to remove the stock chokes and put my own on if i find the correct spec ones?

so far i haven't had my 7970's produce any coil whine... They did whine a bit on startup for a while but that's gone now. so far they're completely silent.
 
The card arrived. But the waterblock needs modding to work in my stystem will show results when im done modding
 
Well guys, I'm leaving the Red team. I made a post about solid state chokes here, and how they still whine on mine (although this whine is quieter down to a buzz, I'll give it that much)

The fact that only the 7970 had manufacturers making their cards with solid state chokes (save for the massive ASUS DirectCU 680 which takes up 3 slots) was the sole remaining reason I was buying AMD. Now no more. I'm done with this crap. I'm going down to my local B&M store and buying whatever I can get my hands on and return right away if it has coil whine, AMD or Nvidia.

I was an idiot to believe in it so strongly, and I apologize to anyone I've misled as a result.
