Hey guys, long time reader spurred by a recent problem to join this place of great knowledge!
I'm currently running a His 4870 1gb in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with 10.8a drivers and everything was beautiful until playing Mafia 2.
You see once upon a time I owned a MSI 6800gt and needing a bit more fps I tried squeezing some more juice out of it by giving it the tiniest bit of an over clock - until I came back to the game I was playing at the time and saw massive tears across the screen (I don't mean lack of AA tears either - or V Sync for that matter).
What worries me is that recently I have been having similar artifacting AND my video card just came out of warranty a month ago. After a quick email to HIS to be responded in some foreign sounding English that was impossible to interpret I gathered that I would get no further support from them (and as such I shall vote with my wallet not to purchase their products again).
As a computer science student I figured that I should treat this as a problem that I could overcome. So I downloaded Ozone Furmark and did the most intensive stress test I could to see if I could replicate the tearing/artifacting - 30 minutes in and nothing.
The only home-based solutions I can think of, is loading up some sort of Linux distro and attempting to write to the video card memory directly to see which module is defective and causing my problem. Apparently it's not so hard to obtain said pieces of electronics and solder them on yourself. And friends in the same field as I have suggested to take off the cooler and just bake it at 180 degrees for a bit ("until golden brown"). Something also tells me formatting and trying again from scratch wont effect this problem.
What concerns me is that I haven't over clocked this card at all (hence the story about the 6800gt) because I didn't want to encounter similar problems.
So what can you suggest I can do about this? In regard to further testing or remedying the problem. Or is it time to wait for the new red cards - or snag a GTX 460 (For $275 AUD - how shit is that! / excuse my French)
Also, If I alt-tab in windows I occasionally get weird tears that make it look all grainy but it would take multiple tries again to get it to 'tear' again.
