I upgraded my computer about 6 months ago from an:

AMD 2700+
A-Bit KD7-e
1 Gig Corsair VS 2700
Radeon 7500
Lite-on 52x 32x 52x CD-RW
Memorex DVD-ROM 16x
WD 80GB 7200 HD

to an:

AMD 64 3000+
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
"High Performance" (IE not VS) RAM, but I forget exactly what kind
MSI Nvidia 6600GT
The same DVD drive
The "same" HD (same make/model, but a new one), but added a 200 GB

I have recently been having two really weird problems. The first is that sometimes a HD, will just power off. It makes the same noise as when you are rebooting your computer. Obviously this makes the computer not happy and it likes to lock up then.

The other thing that I have only seen in the last maybe week is a screen from Nvidia that pops up saying that there was a problem powering my video card and they are going to power down a bit so that it doesn't damage anything.

The PSU I have right now is a RaidMax 420W. The rails read +3.3v 26.0 amps +5v 32.0 amps +12v 13.0 amps -5.0v 0.5 amps -12.0v 0.8 amps +5Vsb 2.0 amps

I know this is not a name brand PSU and I am wanting to get a new one, but up till recently this one had been working fine. Does this sound like a PSU problem, or should I start looking at a possible other problem?

This is why I try not to "upgrade" multiple components in one shot. :D

When I've had HDD's "reset" it's always been one of these problems:

Bad HDD.

Power connector not all of the way in.

(RARE!) Bad motherboard.

check your connections...twice.

if this isnt the case it could be your IDE slot on your mobo is broken but its very rare.

finally, try running a disk SMART utility program. that usually will tell you if your HD is broken. also try using differnt power connectors or changing out your PSU, which could very well be the problem if its erroring out your vid card also...

With the HD I think part of it is that the connectors I have are really loose...I tried to get the tightest I have, but I only have two lines...or whatever and the video card directions said that I should have the video card on its own line...(I know that isn't the correct term, I'm sorry, I am not a PSU guru). I almost had to do a full upgrade because I was switching the CPU to a different socket, so I had to use a new MB (obviously). I have run tests (WD has some HD test for if it is a bad drive, and it hasn't shown problems). I am mostly concerned because the past two morning I have woken up to like 50 (not an exaggeration) windows saying my video card had been stepped back so it didn't overpower something, I do not over-clock. I used the old video card with this and it was fine. It has all been fine for the past 5 and a half months and now it is getting really weird.

My motherboard also has SMART capabilities and all of my drives are tested when it boots, and it boots fine.

Where's all of your old parts? Lying around or running in another PC now?

the reason I have a new computer is my grandmother needed one, so she bought my old one. I figured since I was going to be servicing it anyway, knowing what was in it would be good. So they are all currently in Hawaii...and working just fine.

I know I could use to update...Ideally I would also like to get a new case, but I don't really have any discretionary money at the moment. So what I am asking is sort of a two fold question. First, these things that are happening, should I be extremely concerned about them. Second, what is the likelyhood that a new PSU would help resolve them? I have money that I could spend on a new PSU if I needed to because a crash is imminent, but if I can avoid spending that money ATM that would be better. I lost my job this summer and am trying to find a new one.

How powerful would I need it to be? Since I am wanting to step up, will I need to go up to like a 500 or more? http://www.pcpowercooling.com/products/viewproduct.php?show=S47ATX would this one be good, or would I still want more power probably? I also want to add a burner...maybe CD and DVD
That is more than enough & with +12V@26A you are good for a single 6800GT/U or 7800GT/GTX video card, too! ;)

Exact same thing happened to me but in this case, I lost a drive. Basically, my system didn't shut down properly and one of my HD's started to stutter and gave me crc errors. I thought it was just the HD failing until I heard my new replacement HD literaly shut down and restart while I was surfing the net. Going into my Bios, I found that my voltage on the 12v rails was dipping into 4v and fluctiuating rapidly. My 3 was at 2.8 and my 5v was at 3.

So now, I'm awaiting an Enermax 460Watt from New egg.
