I've been waiting for the dust to settle on this x800/6800 debate; mostly waiting 'till something showed up in stock, so I don't have to pre-order. At this point it looks like I'll probably be waiting until mid-september. If I'll be waiting that long, then why not wait for the next gen, right?

I'm not planning on 'upgrading' to PCI-X for a very long time... so here's my question- what do you think will be the highest-end AGP card before the standard is dropped? Will Nv and ATI bother releasing AGP versions of their next-gen cards? Are the 6800UE's or X800XTPE's as good as you'll ever be able to get running an AGP board?

Why is everyone shitting their pants over PCI-E???? This new "standard" , gives almost no performance increase, and agp 8x will be on new motherboars for ages to come. So shut up about PCI-E! (<--not you, but all the jerks who are going apeshit over PCI-E)

They were making PCI cards for a whle before it died. I'm not an expert but expect to see cards with AGP for a while. By the time videocards are PCI-E only, you'll probably already have a PCI-E board, because by that time it'll be so mainstream.

Agreed. AGP 8X hasn't even been pushed yet. PCI-E is the future no doubt, but will not be standard for quite some time. No games in the next 12 months atleast will even begin to need what PCI-E can give.

Best bet... upgrade you card with high end AGP, sit on it.. upgrade you motherboard later on with AGP and PCI-E built on.. then later.. (1-2 years) upgrade to PCI-E vcard. Its the best route.

That is unless you have uber cash to spend and just want to rip yourself off to showboat :)

Yea but its the PCI cards that needed the new standard. Graphics cards will make use of the new x16 PCI-E graphics slots later on but for now the greatest benefit from PCI-E is freeing up the PCI bus. The PCI bus gets about tapped out when you start installing RAID cards and LAN cards and Sound Cards and everything else.

I'm sure AGP'll be around for a while. Hell, just about every AMD chipset right now runs AGP. I'm just wondering if the vid card companies'll stick with it. There doesn't seem to be much talk about it... even with ATI's latest onsalught of x300s and x600s- all for PCI-X
