Higher temps with XP-120 compared to SP-94

I used to max out at 49C with the SP-94 and 92mm tornado on high, with the fan on low it would hit 54C. (See complete system in Sig and all temps are using two instances of Prime95) Now after "upgrading" to the XP-120 I reach a max temp of 57C even with a 120mm Delta fan flowing over 150 cfm. Needless to say I am not happy with the XP-120. The ONLY thing the xp-120 has going for it is the use of 120mm to decrease noise. A couple things I do not like is that it lacks the mass of the pure copper SP-94. Also, I hate the fact that it uses the shitty Intel bracket, I have reseated the heatsink several times and I really miss the sp-94 mounting backet. Even after reinstalling several times with AS5 my temps are still worse than the sp-94 and I have also decreased my overclock. I need to get a freaking Vapochill already.

Here is this big SOB. I also had to reinstall the stock pos nb heatsink, which is on its last leg ONCE again.

I wonder how it would perform had they used a better mounting bracket and used all copper... *drool*

I thought you couldn't install that thing on a IC7-G. Dang that thing is huge.

If they used all copper it would probably kill the motherboard.

i told you guys that the xp-120 wasn't the best performing cooler...

my aerocool dp-102 performed better than it did...

i bought a coolermaster hyper 6...and with one tornado at the slowest setting on my fan controller it beats out everything talked about here...

i was thinking of a hyper6 as an alternative to this monster. how do you deal with the weight/torque concerns?

Actually the Thermalright XP-120 weighs 370 grams. The Hyper 6 weighs in at nearly 1000 grams.

Hyper 6 is very good....you can't go wrong but a vapochill is realy temping isn't?

The temps are so bad I am going back to the sp-94.

edit: I am not sure what I am gonna do yet, because it is more quiet and may be worth the extra few degrees. Plus I dont feel like taking apart two computers again.

I have heard others are getting great results! I am rethinking the purchase of the XP120mm over my SP94 from what you have said.

I get around 30/c idle and ~41/c full load.

I guess the noise is a bit high. I am using a Panaflo 92mm fan @2500rpm@57cfm@35db

Should I stick with it or go for the XP120?

Stick with it.

You have used the XP120 before?

No, but you already have one of the best p4 coolers on the market. Why spend another $50 on a heatsink that has proven to be only marginaly better (if that) than the SP-94. You can do whatever you like I'm just saying if I was you I would stick with what I had and put that extra $50 to something more important.

same thing i wanna know, maybe he wanted to get just as good or better performance with less noise?

Exactly. I would like it to be a bit quieter than it is now but still maintain some "chill" on my CPU. ;)

Well if you get that XP-120 I might buy your sp-94 from you.

It is not worth the money to purchase it if you already have a good heatsink. Copper is better at disappating heat off the cpu, and it has been proven time and time again.

If it performs as well as my SP94 and is quieter--I will gladly sell it to you and include the 92mm panaflo.

Actually, correct me If i'm wrong but isnt aluminum better at the dissapating heat into the air than copper but copper transfers heat much better than alumium? I believe thats why alot of HSF's have copper slugs.

Well, try as i may, the XP120mm did not perform any better than my trusty SP94. In fact, in my case, (computer case that is), I have space issues to contend with. My PSU is too close to the pipe "nubs" on the XP120mm, they acutally press against the fan grill on my PSU. This is with the round part of the pipes on the XP120 touching the NB HS which in my case had to be "adjusted" to make the XP120 fit. And like I said, my case temp and IDLE CPU temps were almost the same. The XP120mm is 2 degrees HIGHER than my SP94 was at IDLE. The only good thing is that the noise level did decrease, but not enough to justify giving up my SP94. So i am returning the XP120. If I had a different mobo and larger case I would probably stick with the XP120. I don't think it's a bad HSF combo, just not a good fit for me. I have reached the max my board can support in terms of processors, and I don't OC--the reason for getting the SP94/XP120 is because the room my PC is in usually gets rather warm during the summer. Damn room with no A/C!!

shouldn't the heatpipes be facing down, or to the side, not up?

I thought I read that somewhere . . .

I tried to save you the time and money.

They were when I had it mounted. The Heatpipes were touching the NB HS and the nubs were touching my fan grill on my PSU fan.

Yeal, well, I am a slow learner. ;)

I should have left well enough alone. I wasted a lot of time uninstalling the mobo, unmounting the SP94, remounting the intel stock RM, "trying" to get the XP120 to fit, only to find out it wasn't any better, then taking it out, unmounting the intel stock rm, and then remounting the SP94 and reinstalling the mobo. A big waste of about 3.5 hours total only to be back where I started.

Did you end up keeping yours anyway?

I sold my sp-94 to a friend and put it in a pc I was building him, basically the same as my pc in my sig. So, I am stuck with the xp-120 and I am starting to think alot more about watercooling.

I don't OC and I was thinking about just putting the Stock Intel HSF back in and leaving it at that. I just don't have the Stock Intel HSF anymore. Should I be concerned about the weight issue of the SP94 harming my mobo?

I wouldn't worry about it. Some people are using the coolermaster hyper 6 and are having no such problems. The hyper 6 weighs more than the sp-94.

Did you see the review on the XP90 on overclockers.com?

I may want to see what that has to offer--hehe. I should learn from my mistakes.

I'm curious as to why you've got your motherboard laying on the bed like that OrionNT lol.

Have you heard of static electricity? Its one of the leading causes of hardware failure.

And the thing is, PC components are extremely sensitive to ESD and just a tiny discharge that you can't possibly even feel is enough to destroy a piece of hardware.

Yes, I have heard of "static electricity". PC components are sensitive, wow I gotta write that one down my old EE journal. ;)

For sale:

Used SP94 w/ 92mm H/O Panaflo fan.

I have switched to the XP90 and it works better!

LMK if you want the SP94.

hey i see you online right now!!! do you have AIM or MSN? i wanna talk to you about the xp90!
