I was wondering if I should get a higher resolution screen with the laptop on the link. I was wondering because on my laptop now when I play games the higher resolution screen just seems to hurt my graphics card. If I had a 1280x800 instead of a 1680x1050 for example then wouldn't I get better frame rates and my screen would still be clear and have good quality. Because when I lower the graphics to 1280x800 on this laptop with the 1680x1050 it looks like crap, but runs the game awesome. But when I turn the resolution up to 1680x1050 it looks clear again but the games fps sucks. I hope you know what I'm trying to say. Thanks for the help. This is the build I am looking at.

p.s. I know my computer isn't so hot so don't bash me for it.

My pc now is 1.66ghz duo core. 2gb ram. ATI X1400 256mb
 
Its the native resolution. You could change it, but it would look horrible.
 
Yeah, but if I get the higher resolution screen will it drop the performance of the graphics card on games.
 
I got to hand it to dell.. that laptop doesn't look too bad for the price, especially if you upgrade the components with 3rd party parts.
 
with laptop you are pretty much tied to the resolution of LCD. you can't even change the screen.

This is what I was talking about.
You really cant change the res at all. You can FORCE a res, but like I said, it will look REALLY bad.
 
It doesnt look as bad as your making it out to be. Scaling technology has come a long way and it looks decent in games. Obviously horrible in windows or maybe games with lots of text. But really if the screens half decent it shouldent look all that bad.
 
a large screen will result in a higher maximum resolution but it will still hurt your performance no matter what.

like the poster above, you could use some way to scale the game on the screen and the game will only uses those specific pixels on the screen and the rest will be blacked out.
 
If your gonna do the higher resolution one get the 8600M graphic card it would help=)
 
It all depends on what you prefer. If you absolutely must play on native resolution, then you should get the lower resolution monitor for that laptop.

I prefer getting the larger screen, because its way better to have more space for desktop work and internet browsing, imo. Its nice to have two readable pages of msword open at one time, or one word document + internet browser on screen at the same time. Then when I play games, I just lower the resolution in the game settings to get better fps. I know you don't like that, but it doesn't bother me much. Then again, I don't use my laptop for gaming all too much.

But like I said earlier, its your call. If you game more, get the lower resolution monitor and play your games natively at that res.
 
If you can afford the extra $150, step up the screen to 1400x900 and Vid card to the 8600m if you plan on gaming with this lappy a good bit. For very light gaming, it won't be worth it.
 
1280X800 on a 15.4" suck. Higher resolution really is usefull, all the time.
