High pitched CPU whine

Hey there, I recently completed a new rig. It is running incredibly stable and fast...couldn't be happier. Only problem is I'm getting an interference whine when the CPU is working and it is coming from the CPU area on the mainboard. I've removed any extermal possibilities liek speakers and my keyboard/mouse wireless dock/sender. Any ideas?

relevant specs are:
Athlon 64 3400+
ASUS K8V Deluxe
Corsair XMS DDR400 1GB
Raptor 10kRPM HD
9800Pro 256
NEC 2500A DVD-RW/+RW

is it coming from a pc speaker? If it is, couldn't you disable it in the bios?

Not going to fix the problem, but it may hide the symptoms.

hmm i think i know what you are talking about it makes a high pitch whine sound every 30 minutes for me and i have the asus a7n8x dlx.. It scared me the first time i heard it.. But i never found out what it was i know its not overheating.

No it isn't from the system speaker. It is coming from the CPU area on the MOBO and it isn't from the HS fan either. It is definately an electical impulse interference noise. Kind of like the whine you get from a bad monitor, flourscent lighting or a dying fridge. It pulses on and off rhythmically. It is so high in frequency I know most people won't hear it. I may try some better cable shielding and noise dampening in the case.

make sure your power supply is connected securely to the motherboard. if you have another power supply lying around the house you could try using that. my guess is that something is wrong, like the cpu is getting sudden surges of higher voltage or somethin.

I believe I read something about the mosfets/voltage regulators by the socket making a whining noise on some boards. Never knew if anyone came up with an actual fix.

I narrowed it down to the middle coil tot he left fo the CPU. Might be RMA time. Damn, and I thought this build was problem free. LOL, yeah right.

Narrowed it down even more. The noise comes only when data is being sent through the USB ports. Got an RMA so I'll see if a new board fixes it. If not I'll just have to limit USB usage. I was running my cable modem with a USB port so that is why it was always making the noise, since there was usually some data coming in from the modem. Irritating.

My Asus A7N8X-X makes a similar noise whenever there is CPU activity (with nothing in the background running), but if I leave F@H running, there is no noise. Definetely wierd. The same coils are causing the noise too (coils in the power regulation section of the MB). I'm going to RMA and get some other board instead... something that powers the CPU off the +12v rail, not the +5v.

Yeah I've read that this is an issue with the ASUS boards which is a shame becasue this is such a killer performer. Hopefully board #2 doesn't have this. I know a few guys with the same board as me and they don't get the whine. Everyone cross their fingers!

Well do you have any USB devices? Like I said, that coil only makes the noise when data comes across the USB bus. When something is just plugged in it doesn't do it. I've since started using an RJ45 cable for my cable modem instead of teh USB and things are cool. I'm still RMA-ing since I will probably use other USB devices and I don't want the whine...even if it is once in a while.

One more thing. When my new board arrives can I simply plug everything in and go? I'll have to make the minor BIOS adjustments for my SATA drive, but everything should be cool once that is set...right?

If it's the exact same board you should be just fine, you may have to do some BIOS updates and stuff, but otherwise you should only have to plug everything back in and boot up.

Just an update. I RMA'd my board a few days after I originally posted this issue. Mwave was great and really fast about it too. The new board, same model, had some updated caps beyond the already updated ones on the previous one I had. Looks like revision 3 of this board in terms of cap selection.

Good news is NO MORE INSANE WHINE!! The board runs perfectly and I couldn't be happier. The only thing was that I needed to reformat and reinstall XP. Eventhough I had the exact model mobo and nothing else changed, XP threw-up as soon as the desktop loaded and automatically rebooted. Luckily I had anything important backed up.

For those of you with ASUS boards and strange high pitched noises, especially when data comes in from external devices, I highly recommend RMA-ing or using your warranty. ASUS seems to know of the issue and have addressed them with better caps and/or coils.
