Hello all, as you can see I am new to this forum, I have been directed here from another one due to the knowledge that gathers here.

Here is my problem....

I recently arrived at Bucknell and hooked up my computer and found that I can now download at 2mb a sec which was very nice. I install XMP (Unreal 2 mulitplayer game) hop on my favorite server and get a ping of 4000 and outloss spikes to the 300's. I try different servers and no luck... high pings on all... very unstable high pings. I was wondering if there was anything that I can do to improve the situation. Thank you so much, I cannot last 4 years w/o online gaming it just wouldn't be the same. Thanks again.

As a test bed, try another game to see if your lagginess is not just limited to one game.

Try playing on another server and see if your ping rate is high.

Talk to the IT dept of your university. It is my experience that the IT staff at a university has NO PROBLEM with people playing games and may help you out specifically - they're just happy you're not getting help so your "kazaa connections go waaaay faster" ... :D

They most likely have a packet shaper set up to lower the priority of most/all student traffic. However, as someone said, it doesn't hurt to talk to them and say "Hey, I want to play online games, is there anything you can do?" - as long as they know you aren't going to go out there leeching from Kazaa. Of course, it'll also help your case if you never use P2P apps - that'll make them even happier.

such things were happening to me when I was in my fraternity house...but that only happened when our 10Mbit line to campus was saturated.

my 2 cents..

Ok thanks... I will talk to them about it when classes begin and I get some time. As of now I am pretty busy with orientation.

well I talked to the IT guy and he said that games and p2p file packets get all the way to the end of the line like all the other packets... then they get sorted and prioritized below all net and research packets... thus providing high pings and packetloss for games.... is there anything that I can do is it just that is how the network is set up and I have to live with it?

may want to think about moving off campus. I know I pay less this way...course I only pay for 512k service witch is just fine for gaming.

sounds like a lazy bunch of sods.

I seem to remember freshman year a problem with certain game servers at RIT and my friends got a lot of help.

Moving off campus might be the best thing if you're really serious about it... but that's a pretty big thing to do to just play some games. If they get enough complaints they're likely to change it, you could try getting every gamer you can find together and signing a petition asking them to change it.

P2P can stay at the bottom for all you care, it's the gaming you want.

Your choices:
petition them to change it
play only on on-campus game servers
live with it
move off campus

ya well I am not about to move off campus just to play games... it might influence me in the next couple years as a reason to move off.... but I think I will just deal with it, and try to make progress but it doesn't look hopeful. Thanks for the help.
