High Operating Temp - Why?

I have just built a system with 64bit P4 and am using it with a ZALMAN 7700 fan. When the fan is running at 1350 RPM, and the CPU is idle, I'm getting a temperature of around 47 - 48 C.

I can't understand why it is so high. The only thing I can think of the is the thermal grease I'm using. I just used the white stuff that came with the fan, and put quite a generous smear on there.

Any clues anyone?

you hit the nail on the head, also i have personaly been dissapointed with zalmans 7xxx cpu coolers performace for what they cost

Ok, so the fan itself is the problem, you think? What sort of temperature should I be aiming for?

Those temps are not high at all for a P4 Prescott, you can go over 70C with max CPU load without problems. People in this forum are generally too concerned about even moderate CPU temps.

QFT, never ran my cpu on air cooling so couldnt tell you what normal temps are i just can tell you i get 45C idle 50C load at 1.50v

Looks like it's nothing to worry about then. Is it worth trying a different thermal grease (like that silver stuff)?

of course, but dont sweat bullets over your temps they seem alright, just a bit on the high side
