High northbridge temps on P5Q

My MB temps are hovering at 57C idle. On speedfan, it starts to indicate that it's hot once it hits mid 40C. I've never noticed it that high until last night. Does anyone else have this high of a temp? How much can it handle, and should I be worried? Thanks.

My P35 gets pretty hot too. idles in the low 50's and load is 55-58. It's mainly because these heatsinks that come with the mainboards don't do that well. They do just enough to keep the chip from frying itself, but for the most part, just for IC longevity, I'd invest in upgraded cooling.

HINT: A really cheap way to go about this is to simply zip-tie a cmall fan over the heatsink. Scythe makes a very quiet 40mm fan for around $5 or $6.

Last night after some gaming, it went up to 61C. I'm still wondering how much they can handle. Because honestly, if it can take the heat then I don't care if it stays hot. I'm trying to stay away from adding fans because I like things quiet.

The fans are listed as 27 dBA, I can't hear them one bit.

Ideally, a quiet fan will be under 18 or 19 DBa. 27 will be noticeable, however, the definition of quiet is different from one to another. My girlfriend thought my last budget box was quiet, where as I thought it was a fuckin' tornado. For my new build, the electric hum of my cheap USB powered speakers are louder than my computer.

If you don't like fans, and are willing to spend around $25-$35, you can get some great passive heatsinks from Xigmatek, Thermalright and Noctua. If you would rather have a quiet fan, Microcool and Swiftech, both have some nice ones. SilenX and Cooler Master have some too, but I can't say if they're any good for cooling and/or quietness.

Thanks.

How exactly do you attach those little fans to the stock heatsink? Using a ziptie?

Got any pics for example?

You can also check that you've got good airflow in the case as that can to some extent do the same thing as a fan on the cooler itself - all you need to do is move some air over it. Whether you do that with say a 200+mm fan in the side of the case or a tiny one ziptied to the cooler itself doesn't make much difference to the NB. I would be really, really surprised if even 70 C was enough to shorten the life of the board though.

Hey Carlos, do you happen to have any links? This is something I am rather curious about (don't want to burn out my board). It's probably worth the money for the cheap little fans either way though.

And "Ideally" the manufactures would list realistic numbers. I have gotten many fans listed in the "quiet" range only to find out I bought a 2nd vacuum cleaner. And if they are quiet they don't move anywhere near the listed CFM. What I was saying is that they are listed as 27dBA, but I could not hear them over my HDD's, and for the air they move I believe that is pretty good.

Thanks.

The fans I listed come with screws, and they just screw right into the HS.

Touche'. You're right. Several manufacturers come to mind that do that. SilenX is the one of the worst, but I've had Cooler Master and Thermaltake fans that do the same.

Nexus and Noctua are the only manufacturers I know that don't fluff their numbers. That's the main reason I'll buy only them (and Nexus fans are well proven and better priced). A good point you proved though.

I agree SilenX is one of the worst, the fans are without a doubt quiet, but move almost no air, I bought one to try out and see if they were as bad about fudging numbers as I had heard, and they are.

I have moved to Delta, the AFB1212SHE model, big loud fan, but on a controller they are not to bad and move a good deal more air than the Thermaltake fans they replaced and do it with less noise.

It's something I read while googling. I've been looking on Intel's site for the p45 chips, but no luck finding any temp specs for it yet.

Do you know any retail stores that carry those brands? I would rather not make an online purchase off newegg or something for an item that costs as much to ship it. I wonder if Fry's has anything decent.

If your just looking for small 40mm fans, the ones I listed have free shipping from the egg. I don't know of any box stores that carry good fans at a cheap price. I find Sidewinder computers to have better fan choices and pretty good shipping costs compared to newegg on fans.

Well, looks like it's going to be impossible to mount a fan directly on top of the heatsink. My cpu's heatsink (XIGMATEK HDT-S1283) is in the way. I also have a tv tuner that is occupying the first pci-e x1 slot, so the space is very tight. However, I put my finger on the heatsink and it didn't seem too hot. Thinking about just ignoring it.

You can off set the fan on the HS, it will hold in place just fine with 2 screws, I have it like that right now because of my TRUE, but I will be going to a better NB HS set up soon.
