High load temps Q6600

Idle has been as low as 32c at night at probably around 65F ambient in CA. However when I start small FFT they raise up to 65C and as high as 71C+ using Intel Burn Test. 30C+ on load seems pretty high to me when I'm reading other people's idle and load temps are only at a 15-20c difference.

I've remounted my Tuniq Tower 120 twice already and only used a line across the 4 cores with TX-2. I've tighten the tower with pliers till they can't be turned any more on 4 sides. The thing is, there's a square burn mark under the TT120 from my old CPU and I don't have any sandpaper to get rid of it. Would this make a huge difference?

Also my Antec P182 case does not have any intakes atm. I have ordered some Yate Loon low fans and a fan chamber thing for my 5.25 slot however. So I'm going to see if that would make a big difference. My current tri-cools are on medium and there's one at the top and the back of the case as exhaust. My TT120 is running at 1650rpm and has air blowing out to the top exhaust.

I should mention that the CPU is lapped (I bought it this way). I'm sure I can hit higher clocks but these temps are really holding me back. I tried to OC to 3.4ghz at 1.4v but the CPU throttled itself to x6 multi due to the heat and this is with the case opened.
 
Really? Because I've read a lot of other people temps with the same cpu and hs and their load and idle difference is usually a lot smaller than mines. But this could be due to the fact that they're not using small fft I guess.

So the 30c+ jump from idle to load is normal? I thought it was due to not being able to remove the heat quickly enough from the case or something. It's just frustrating that my temps are so high compared to others with the same setup.
 
People say a lot of things. You can't believe everything that you read on the forums. You have good temps now on a cooler that wasn't really even a top of the line cooler when it was released. It was a good cooler for its time but there are budget coolers on the market now that will outperform it.

I think that even 85c in linpack is fine as long as its stable.
 
agree with others, temps not bad. if others are reporting smaller delta's btw ldle & load, then perhaps they have lower ambient temps or using high end cooling or water cooling. alternately, as BababooeyHTJ suggested, those forum members 'maybe' just full of shit.
if it's worrying you and you want more out of your q6600, slap on a better cooler or even one of those water kits antec sells.

judging by the vcore displayed in cpuz, you have a lot of room left to push your kentsfield chip further (obviously with better cooling). what's your chips VID? you can grab the cpu's default VID from 'core temp'. generally q6600's with low VID's (1.2xxx volts) oc further. not always, but it's a rough guide.
 
Alright. The vid is 1.275v. Would the CM 212+ be better? I don't wanna spend any more money on this old machine, just wanted to push the cpu a little more so it'll last me another year or so. I need 1.38v+ to get it to 3.4ghz for it to even past the standard IBT test. I couldn't test it in prime95 before the CPU throttled to x6. That's why I'm trying to get the temp down and was wondering if it was my setup.

It would do a little better. If you were to find a good deal on a 212+ why not? I just wouldn't spend too much.

I was under the assumption that the cpu only throttles due to high temps. What is the other reason?
 
What were your temps at the time?

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it was the motherboard. That is kind of a lot to ask of a board with only a 4-pin feeding the cpu and only three unsinked phases. Thats if you are using the motherboard in your sig.

I think TJmax on that cpu is around 100C, you have a ways to go. I wouldn't even try pushing more on your current motherboard. There isn't many power phases and the vrms don't even have heatsinks so they must get hot.
 
Yeah the NB heatsink is too hot to touch for more than a sec. Do you think 2 intake fans would help the situation or is that the end of the road for me?
 
the NB's on the 3x & 4x series chipsets are known for being toasty. to stablise a high FSB often requires a ratcheting up the NB volts. i had to drop a waterblock on my NB (OC - 411 MHz).

some more intake airflow into your case won't hurt but you'll need something closer to your NB chip

if you have a small fan floating about, just screw / zip tie one on top.

you might want to grab a monitoring tool to check the temps of your MB (north & south bridge). like HWMonitor

Yeah I have hwmonitor. Is it listed as System temp? I believe the highest I've seen it is as 40c. And I know why my CPU throttled now. I had TM2 on and the PC health setting set to 80c. I thought that setting had to do with the actual CPU temp and not the cores :(.

regarding your temp sensors in HWmonitor, not sure if 'system temp' = 'NB temp'.
on my motherboard (intel x38), i have the following temp sensor readings;

-SYSTIN
-CPUIN
-Remote 1
-Local
-Remote 2

SYSTIN: is the motherboard temp sensor which i believe is located at the bottom of my MB near my 2nd PCIe x16 slot
CPUIN: is the temp sensor located in the CPU socket
Remote 1: is the sensor for my northbridge
Local: no clue where this temp reading is from
Remote 2: is the sensor for my southbridge

i'm fairly certain this is correct. however i usually use everest for my readings so i'm cross-referencing what i get with everest to orient myself with HWmonitor's readings.
your P35 is fairly similar to my X38 so you should get almost the same readings.
what are the other labels for temps is HWmonitor throwing up?

Its not the northbridge that I would be worried about. Your motherboard can not reliably supply enough power for any real overclocking. I wouldn't feel comfortable running the types of clocks that you are running right now, never mind anymore.

You have a three phase power system feeding a pretty power hungry first gen quad. To top it off there aren't even any heatsinks on the vrms.
