High Idle Temps?

Hey, I have an old dinosaur of a video card, about 5 years oldish. It's an NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT. I don't overclock and it just has the stock fan, but it idles at 80°C. I'm no mathematician, but to me 80°C sounds extremely high and believe it should be about half that temperature.

Am I crazy to think that is high?

Is there a solution to bring this down lower besides increasing the fan speed?

Depends what the temperature is at load. If it's no higher than 80C either, then it just means the fan spins very slowly at idle. Can turn it up if you're worried.
 
I just ran a little 3DMark06 and the temps immediately after the test was at 108°C. Wow...
 
Maybe try cleaning off the old TIM and applying new? Also, is there a ton of dust or debris accumulated in the hsf?
 
idle 80 is high for that card, as it is pretty old now, i imagine the thermal pads on the heatsink are either completely dried/crusted. If you have some AS ceramique or spare thermal pads i would suggest taking the stock HS off, taking the old crappy thermal pads/remainders off and applying some AS5 ceramique/new thermal pads to the card.

IIRC the normal temps are around 60 C idle, no more than 80C load for that card.

while you are taking it apart, make sure to clean dust off etc. the normal cleaning routine.
 
Straight-forward replies. I'll give her a good cleaning and perhaps a new HSF if I can find one for a couple bucks. Thanks.
 
Cleaned it out and the idle temp dropped to 58°C and load temps at 79°C. MUCH better, but I still feel like those are high. I applied new TIMs and thermal paste. I guess the other option is to get a new HSF, or better yet, new Video Card. :D
 
Those are fine for a card of that generation. Remember standard for the time was 60C idle and 90C load. [That was safe then, it's safe now, just not for 8800s because they were badly made) Plenty of room to spare there.

+1, those temps are within the original specs normal temps.
