I just got my i7 920 system together, being cooled with a coolermaster v8 and with stock core speeds I was getting temperatures in the high 40's low 50's, so I just reseated the heatsink now and applied artic silver 5 with the line method recommended on the artic silver website. Now I am getting temperatures in the mid to high 40's...better but nowhere near what the temperatures should be with this cooler..this is the temperatures I'd expect from a stock cooler, any idea what's going on here?
load temps with prime95 running is low 70s high 60's atm
only been running it for 8 minutes

Are you overclocked or stock? If your stock those load temps are little high but I'm not really a fan of this cooler. I think it's overpriced. How's your case cooling? That could be affecting the temps as well as high ambient temps.

stock speeds, case cooling i'm not sure about, new case as well, lian li pc-a71, has 6 fans in it all powered by the psu via molex, 2 exhaust in the back and the harddrive cage has 2 fans on each side

Should have pretty good airflow in that case. What are the temps like in your room? If it's in the 30C's then it's not that bad.

Either the cooler isn't tightened down enough, your cpu runs hot, or the cooler isn't very good. how was the contact patch when you removed the cooler to reapply as5

wasn't very well actually, most of the as5 was still on the cpu and barely any on the cooler so i tightened it more the 2nd time around

yeah most of it, except the corners
could it just be a bad tube of as5?
i've had it for about 2 years just sitting in a box in on a shelf

i installed my stock cooler with the pre-applied thermal paste, and i am getting roughly the same temperatures..do i have a bad v8?

Did you make sure it was mounted correctly?
Ive heard that the instructions for installing the v8 are a bit misleading.

yeah i watched a couple videos on it and followed the instructions carefully, noticed an error in coolermasters diagram though where they had it upside down, i just applied the sample goop of thermaltake grease they supply with the v8 and im getting low 40 temps right now, although i did drop the vcore to 1.035..so i don't even know if it's stable

well it's 82F outside and i just came back in and it felt a lot warmer in my room so maybe that explains it..i need to get a thermometer

I have this same cooler. I have the i7 920 d0 and have it overclocked to 3.6 ghz. Its at about 54 degrees under normal usage. When gaming it gets up to 60-70 degrees..

Not sure if this is normal... When I had it overlocked to 3.2 ghz. It was idling around 42 degrees and gaming it got up to 55-60 degrees.
