high idle temp

im running an athlon xp 2500+ at 1.57voltage and its idling at 40c @ 1.8ghz it useto idle at 35c at 2.2ghz

i let it cool down for a few hours to see if that was because of me running it for a few hours...i have a masscool cooler on it.. kinda crappy, only goes about 2700rpms

im thinking of removing the CPU and the heatsink, wiping off the paste i have on it and reapplying the paste
 
i took it out cleared it of paste, then put it back in socket until it slid into its spot. pushed down the lever to lock it into place. reapplied paste, and running prime95 toture test
 
hmm, well i meant more the steps involved with aplpying paste. you apply a small dab and spead it really thinly with a razor over the entire core?

it's interesting that the mobo doesn't work..

Like it wont boot at all? Did you try clearing CMOS via the jumper and/or battery on the motherboard. If you tried that and still no boot I think we will need a little more info. Such as system beeps if any...how many, long, short? We need more info, good luck though.

Edit: Also, system specs please. And I dont see how 40c is a high idle at all, I idle ~36-37c on a watercooled AMD 64 3400+
 
don't worry, my xpm 2500 @ 2.48 ghz does 49-50c idle. note i only have 1 80mm case fan on intake.
 
no beeps nothing... sign of a motherboard not working... happen ed to me before,actually with this build...anyone know where i can get a cheap motherboard that supports socket A,333fsb and DDR 400 or very similar...this build is getting costly... cuz parts seem to not like me in this cituation

luckily my GF uses the same motherboard... she just got a laptop... all i got to say is freecycle.org great site, free laptop
bailed me out until i get her a new motherboard...
 
Or why not get a 64 bit and reuse the memory, harddrive, psu, cdrom and all that untill you can slowly upgrade everything else? Thats what I did.
 
I have the same problem but with an fx-53 and I have a xp-120 on it. Idle temp is 48C. I must have reseated the sucker 5 times. Tried the super thin layer with a razor, a thick layer, and via the directions on Artic silver's site (small bead the size of a grain of rice). The temp is always the same. If I remove the side panel on my case it drops to about 46. I even used articlean by artic silver to clean the chip and heatsink.
 
40 is high.. ive got my CPU (AMD 64 3200+ running @ 2.2ghz) idling at 22-23c its doesnt go over 33c when under load... so it makes me a little nervous when this cpu is going 60c under load.
 
I think it is my stupid mobo cause the base of the heatsink is cool, and when reading it with my temp gune it says 32c :rolleyes:
