High GPU usage with VLC media player.

Ever since I first installed CCC 11.2, the GPU utilization while playing videos in VLC media player has gone from barely registering in MSI Afterburner, to 45%, and as high as 90% and lots of frame skipping when the GPU is downclocked to 500 MHZ - I have to use Afterburner to force the GPU to run at my overclocked speed of 975 MHZ to get a watchable video, with minimal (but noticeable) frame skipping.

I tried rolling back the drivers to 10.12, and the problem remains. I checked for any video acceleration in CCC and disabled it all, but the GPU utilization is just as high.I tried reinstalling VLC, still no go.

Any ideas as to whats causing this? It's driving me insane.
 
Good idea. If I open the same video files that cause high GPU utilization in VLC in MPC-HC, the GPU usage is as low as it used to be in VLC before 11.2 was installed. I also opened the file in WMP. Low GPU usage there, too. Interesting.

Must be something in VLC doing in then. I can't imagine what setting it could be.
 
After disabling all video options/filters I could find, and resetting VLC media player's settings to defaults, the only way I can get the GPU usage to 0% is by disabling the video track all together. I can't imagine whats causing this.
 
Strange.

You could always use MPC:HC or WMP instead. :)
 
its something with VLC and the fact that hardware accel is still something new for VLC. but MPC-HC is better anyways.. i like the ability to disable all the extra crap like video timer/controls/menu bar and just have the seek bar and video.
 
I was messing with MPC HC and for some reason the seek bar doesn't show up in fullscreen mode. It's enabled in the settings, yet it's not there.
 
happens to me every once in a while.. click on the screen and it should come up.. though i don't run full screen i just drag it to fit so i can still use my task bar since i run dual displays(to lazy to install ultramon).
