i have a qx6700 and i wanted to understand this about high front side bus to the 13x multiplier
right now i'm at 12x 266 and was wondering what benefit it is getting an asus p5k which gives high fsb on the quads like say 7x 400fsb which means dropping the multi to achieve a higher fsb.I've seen the asus p5k doing wonders with the QX6700's and i'm impressed!
I won't be overclocking too high since i'm air cooling but wanted to know what benefit the higher front side bus gives to the higher multiplier
a little understanding of high fsb or multi needed here please and please elaborate for better understanding
thanks

Im no expert but id go with a high FSB and when you hit a wall then start upping the multi.

Well one benefit is that much like the older Intel dual core cpu's the current quad core ones are two dual core dies on the same chip. They currently use the fsb to communicate between the two dies, so the faster the fsb the faster they can communicate. So in theory the processor will run faster, but I have no idea if it works that way in practice.

yeah i'll see if i'll notice any change when i get that asus p5k but please people keep it coming

It is true high FSB can gain extra performance, but the difference is usually not that great, and sometimes there isn't any at all. It is also more complicated than just upping the multi. There are also also issues overclocking the FSB with some motherboards.

If a person have the motherboard and experience to overclocking the FSB with Quads, then I would think a QX6700 using air cooling is not a good purchase, as that person could probably could gain same clocks with a Q6600.

I know with my setup, I could never overclock to the 3500mhz I can bench with, using the FSB exclusively, where now I just up the multi and then the FSB a little bit (13 * 269).

I am not a very experienced overclocker unfortunately, so I could be wrong in all of this.

Front side bus speed is directly related to memory thoughtput and latency.

It is more favorable to run a higher FSB vs a higher mutli.

This is true but as we've seen in many instances over the years in regard to Intel CPUs, the higher FSB's usually make very little or no difference in performance. The nice thing about overclocking by multiplier alone is that you aren't actually overclocking anything but the CPU. That definitely keeps things nice and simple.
