I'm looking for a enw set of headphones to replace my V600's (which have served me well). I'm deciding between Sennheiser HD650's and Sony CD3000. Anyone own these? Anyone know were in baltimore area I can go listen to them? Anyone here whos listened to both? I understand the general philosophical diffrence between the sony and sennheiser sound I just want to know how these models sound

Also the Senns are insanely efficent so I'm leaning towards them cause the greater effency tends to have a cleaner sound at higher spl due to having to use less drive. This is were I currently stand. Also Beyerdynamics? Grado? Im currently researching these two brands. Anything else in the $300-$1000 I should look at?

Being the owner of a (albeit lower-end) grado, I can say that if you like the sound of Klipschorns, then you'll like the sound of Grados. They prefer a brighter sound overall.

From what I read, some people seem to think that the 650's are not necessarily better, but different, and some will like them more. I havn't had a chance to try the hd650 yet though.

The 580/600/650 family is not efficient at all and needs a decent amp to start to get the most out of them.
You're looking at two entirely different sounding phones, the CD3k can be almost painfully bright if paired with a bright amp and while efficient enough, it needs an amp to get anywhere near it's potential. If no amp is planned for it, then save $100 and get an A900, that would sound better. The 3k has a huge soundstage and can have lots of impact when coupled with the right amp. If you're going to listen to classical or ambient then it's hard to beat, but IMO it's not very good with rock. I don't think it allows much energy into the music. With no amp, it's even more reserved(dull*) .
The Grados are more like the CD3k without the soundstage, some models are brighter than others... brightest- 325>125>60>80>rs-2>rs-1>225>ps-1-darkest...is the way it goes from what I gather. The whole line has lots of impact and is great for rock.

Just like with speakers, headphones come down to what sounds best to YOU...not what someone else thinks sounds good! That's like asking someone what color car you should buy, it should be a individual choice.
[Side] Mustang_Steve, do you own a pair of Klipschorns? I own Cornwalls (industrial version), but believe it or not have never heard Klipschorns live. I'm in Ocala, if you own them, and wouldn't mind auditioning them for a stranger....

Nope I don't have them anymore. I restored a pair a few years abcck and kept them for a couple years. One of the best speakers I ever owned for music. The Klipschorns were not very well suited for big bass material though, like home theater...the 15" woofer just did not have the long excursion needed. Sadly I had to sell them as part of my sell-fest to afford to move to california five years ago.
I'm still waiting for the day I can get my hands on something similar to the Klipschorns again, or just a really good line array, similar to the early Infinity products.
Right now I just have some Partsexpress BR-1 kit speakers you can listen to....not bad at all for a $140 kit, but I still want more

Wow Mustang, I think I'd sell my kids before I sold my Klipsch (JK)!
Have you ever heard the Carver Amazings? They were a serious contender when I went looking and ended up buying my Cornwalls. The Carvers were just shy IMHO of the Klipsch, far as "punch".
