High end card predictions

Both ATi and Nvidia seem to be having big issues with yields for the 6800 ultra and the X800 XT PE. Some say that they're trying to increase the clock speeds to beat eachother with sufficient yields. I doubt that either is actually trying to get higher clock speeds. I think it's more of a fact that they're trying to get some sort of mass production of cards at the currently offered speeds.

Getting your hands on either of these cards is very unlikely for somewhat reasonable price. Even the X800 pro's are insanely priced, mainly due to lack of supply.

To me, not only did both companies come out with paper launches (yes, ATi did it too), but neither look to be actually producing what they've promised. My prediction is that the 6800 Ultra and X800XT cards will always be found in low supply, and only at extremely high prices. The 6800 GT and X800 Pro cards will probably be as high as anyone should go, without A) Spending many hours attempting to find a place that actually has one in stock, and B) Spending way too much money buying it. Unfortunately, I don't think this will change either. That's just my prediction though.

Please post any other comments that you have.

Well I don't think ATi's launch was paper. I was able to get mine within two weeks of the announced date of release. That's not a paper launch. Few places had them yes. Fewer places charged a resonable price for them. But they weren't impossible to get. You just had to hit a larger online retailer to get them. I don't consider that a paper launch.

Whereas I have YET to find a 6800 Ultra anywhere. It was announced almost a month before the ATi offerings were and over a month after I got my X800Pro I still can't find them. That's a paper launch.

Im throwing my 2cents out:

I think that in late June, and in July is when we will see more cards in stock. And when they become in stock the prices will slowly fall down to MSRP and lower. If we cant find x800xt's and 6800ultra's in stock by then, then somthing is completely fubar for both companies.

and i think that both companies were wrong on announcements, as we cant find 6800's anywhere, x800pro's are sparce, and x800xt are rare. Nvidia should of had their cards out 30 days or under from announcement, and Ati said they would be available on specific days from retailers, but they wernt. didn't they say x800xt's would be avaliable on the 21st of May?

heh, I don't see the situation improving in the future, as the highend is pushed higher, they will just become scarcer.

people have purchased and recieved X800Pro video cards, so it is not a paper launch, even if supply is low right now, they can be bought and owned by people

x800xt's have also been purchased, i don't know if recieved yet, but they are on backorder at online stores, by the end of this month people will have them in their hands

as for the 6800U, i don't know if anyone has bought and recieved one yet

ive seen more people with 6800u's than i have x800xt's.

theres like 3-4 people with 6800u's over at nvnews. havent seen anyone with a x800xt yet, i know alot were ordered from gateway and random places, but alot have them on backorder.

more people have x800pros than anything, but they werent avaliable until like 2 weeks later after the supposed launch.

if a company says they will be avaliable on a certain date, they should be there on that date. that hasnt happened.

both companies are messin up with putting the products on shelves. nvidia hasnt said any specific date but they announced the card almost 2 months ago it feels like!!! where are these cards.

hopefully we should see some on shelves before june is over.

Jackup from nvnews bought one [eVGA].

And yes, the X800XT was just as paper launched as the 6800U.

What are you talking about? People have already bought X800 pros and XTS for far below MSRP. Best deal i've seen is 349 for the pro, 439 for the XT. Some preorders, but thats the price you pay when it comes out, so it doesn't matter.

As for the ultras, these things are being made already. Ibuypower.com sells them w/ systems.

nobody has a x800xt ForceC, they are either on backorder, or the store doesnt have them. the x800pro right now is the most owned out of all of them, then the 6800ultra (i know MikeC, jakUp, and Sgt_Pitt all have one), and then the x800xt where nobody has em. (unless i missed it)

Yes, I've stated that they are indeed preorders. But whats your point? You pay far less than MSRP, preorder or not.

Except for the fact that nobody has been guaranteed a shipping date. What good is preordering something at lower than MSRP, if the thing you're getting might not even exist yet? What were to happen if the yields were low and they had to lower the clock speeds way down, and you get a POS card? But wait, it rocks because its below MSRP

Just wait till after the 15th, that seems to be the magic date that most of the preordered x800 XTs will be shipped. And I think we will see the Geforce 6800U not too much far behin.
