High density SAS enclosure

A noob question; what is the point of buying sas backplanes? Is it possible to replace sas backplanes that easy? So can I buy a disk chassi and replace the backplanes to sas backplanes? Or is the point of buying them, only for replacement if the backplanes break so I have in reserve?

It's my understanding that the majority of backplanes are specifically designed for the enclosure they are installed in. Having one handy for backup would be neat, but definitely not an easy swap out.

Thats why i like the SMC SC847 jbod i linked at the beginning of this thread. Dual sided with 2 backplanes and dual expanders on each. If any of that fails, there is always another working. And i plan to mirror my pools so that the drives are split between the two sets.

Pretty sweet, but 9U's for 50 drives? thats alot of real estate. SC847 is double sided and fits 45 drives in 4U's. + you can pick em up for a pretty good price.

3000 pounds? I'm not sure what pricing on the SMC stuff is in the UK, but surely must be better than that?

It's more in Canada, but in the US you could get an SC847E26 with 36 bays (+ fit server board) AND a SC847E26-JBOD with 45 bays for ~$4100. That's 81 bays in 8U..

I would assume this is an extreme rarity. i believe he is basically trying to make a "one off" custom enclosure. and i can see how that works for something like a backblaze pod, which uses cheap sata backplanes. But SAS backplanes (especially with a built in expander or dual expanders) are going to be alot more expensive. Which ultimately might make just buying an inexpensive existing enclosure (with it built in) like a supermicro SC847 cheaper.

There is a row of FAN's in the middle, i assume pulling in air from the front through the drives and out the back ones. (seems odd but not something im worried about)

If this is for home use just keep in mind it is LOUD. I assume you would wanna replace the fans with diff ones unless you can stand the noise.

Is the noise of a magnitude more than 2 x Norco 4224's in operation, since that is what it is going to be replacing (partly anyway, I wish it were 5u and had 48 disk capacity!) This is going to be sat upstairs out of the way. I dont mind it being loud as long as it doesnt sound like a banshee is locked in there :)

SMC case has a few more fans (but none in the back like that norco) so i assume sound output would be similar, but that is a guess. and if it does become too much, you can always swap the fans.
