I want to allow my roomate to use my computer, but i dont know how to lock down certain files.

My roomie wants to listen to music on my computer and watch movies when i am gone, but the rest needs to be locked down. I have work stuff that nobody can stumble into and i have all kinds of personal files. I guess no harm done for most of them but i am kind of a personal person and i dont want someone digging around and seeing everything.

And no....its not porn, its other stuff. My roomate is a girl, and i am a guy.....she couldn't care less about boobies and such.

Can i set something up to acess a HDD only from one account? Or password protect a whole HDD? or maybe password a folder? I have 6HDD's and i would prefer to be able to lock 1 drive and leave everything else open. She isn't a brillian computer person so it doesn't have to be insane.....I thought about making the folders hidden (yes this would work for her....she's quick like that) but if she is logged on others might be on my computer too.......its for her friends, not her.

I didn't know where else to post this, if it would get better advice somewhere else, let me know.

Thanx

Can't you just give her a separate username and set the permissions on your folders/HD to be accessible to your username only

Yeah that.

Set up a separate login for her with limited rights. Then from your account right click on what you want to hide, select "Sharing and Security" and click the box that says "Make this folder private."

of course as a [H] member you have little kiddie fileshareing disabled and can just throw some deny access permissions for her account on the folder(s) in question :) Limited accounts also prevent her from doing stupid stuff with windows.

Yeah i was going to setup another account for her....

I will give this a try, never knew you could lock profiles outta folders......will this work for an entire drive?

Use a program called universal shield. Works pretty good. Runs in the background, and hides drives/folders, and can also encrypt. This way, she wont get suspicious why she has a account with limited access

She will have an account with limited access because it's not her bloody computer. Aside from which EVERYONE should be using a limited account for day-to-day operations.
