Hiccuping in games?

Is there any way to prevent or at least reduce the amount of hiccuping in games? I've tried turning off high quality features, but the "jerkiness" doesn't seem to disappear. My machines specs are, IMHO, fairly adequate, so I'm a tad bit confused as to why this is happening.

By hiccuping, I mean the game seems to stutter at random intervals for a split second or so. The game runs smoothly in all other instances.

I'll answer any and all questions that will help get this problem squared away.

It might be that you do not have enough ram. You should have at least 512 mb. I would recommend 1gb for stutter free gameplay.

have you defragmented your hard drive? and how much space have you reserved for paging files?

On paging files:

Please elaborate, I have never heard of this term before.

I will defrag my hard drive, but in the past it has done little to alleviate the problem.

Take a look at this website:http://www.theeldergeek.com/paging_file.htm
There are a lot of websites on it if you google it. Basically keep all the paging files about 1GB on each drive if you have the space and try to keep them all the same size. To get to it right click on my computer icon, then go to properties, then advanced. Under performance click on advanced, then click on the advanced on the new window, then click change virtual memory. Then set whatever size you want but keep them the same sizes.

Recheck the BIOS settings, AGP Aperture Size and Memory Timings are the mandatory settings to check, and if possible uninstall / reinstall the games using latest patches and updates.

Any games in particular that are giving you this problem?

I had similar problems till I added another 512mb ram. That smoothed things out considerably, though occasionally Doom3 will still give me a pause or two. Everything else is like butter.

If not ram, then, as stated above, I would look at the pagefile.

I tried fiddling around with paging but to no avail. I set the minimum to 2MB and the maximum to 1024MB (1GB), and the sporadic hiccups still happen.

How do I check these, and what do I do with them to increase performance?

Mainly Brothers in Arms or any game running the Half-Life 2 Source engine.

I have a feeling I might just need to get some more RAM... Wow. I thought 1GB would be plenty.

EDIT: I just tried running BIA under the lowest resolution with the lowest settings. It still stalls randomly... great.

I have the same problem and I wonder if my cheap ram is suspect. In HL2 I'll see pauses as I'm walking outside or into an area where there's fixing to be alot of action. But after that it runs smooth as butter until the start of another graphic-intense area. I also see the same kind of problem in Desert Combat and I know my specs are more than enough to handle that game. But in UT2004 I never see any pauses, it's nice and smooth throughout.

I had a 6800 OC as well as 6600gt for awhile and I noticed the same pauses with the 6800 OC but not the 6600gt. The 6600gt was always smooth but of course I had to play at lower settings too.

Most people that complain of such problems are running 1,000 things in the taskbar (anti-virus, inetrnet firewalls, etc, etc, etc)

When you are at the desktop with no programs running, ctl-alt-del and click on the processes tab.

How many processes do you have running? More than 30? More than 40?

Look at your CPU usage... is it jumping around? (should be 0-4% jumping is okay for windows maintenance etc, but no more).

I would suspect a bloated taskbar and/or spyware/malware.

Got to run a "clean" machine if you want to game smoothly.

I've been looking at the task manager and I've been finding that "System" randomly jumps from 0 to 20 percent of the CPU every few seconds. Is there any way to stop this?

probably one of your devices. i used to have an HP printer that would give me 15-30% cpu spikes every 3 seconds. i simply disabled the printer when i didn't need it in the hardware manager  :D

Wow, that seems to have helped tremendously. (cf)Eclipse's idea helped me find the source of the problem. It seems a long time ago, right after I bought my Mac mini, I forgot to disable the hp printer I had plugged into Windows. I made sure to do away with it, and to my surprise, the cpu spikes had vanished!

If the problem returns, try searching for "games stuttering" and "6800" on these forums or just google it. The issue is quite widespread and AFAIK occurs most often on AMD platform (never heard of some1 with intel having this issue). It's an acknowledged issue and there might a fix available. I didn't follow this up since I didn't experience it but I remember running into a huge # of threads on this issue
