hibernation effecting boot order, etc?

curious. I took out an old hdd out of my laptop after it had hibernated. Put in a new one and put in a windows xp disc to load xp onto the new drive. It would not read the cd rom. Kept saying cancel rom drive or something of that nature. Does hibernation alter BIOS settings? I had to put the old disc drive in. and shut down the laptop. Then put the new drive in and it worked fine. Anyway, I figured someway or another, the hibernation mode had told the computer not to boot from anything but the hdd. Only thing is,, there wouldn't be any memory in any violatle form of ram. So figured it had to be firmware, flash memory, something nonvolatile related.

In new laptops (think made in this century) hibernation has nothing to do with the bios. In old ones the bios took care of it.
 
i wonder then, if it is all done through the operating system, how it knows to boot only from the hdd when the original is taken out
 
I'm guessing the boot order was set wrong and it always did that even with the original in there.
