hello all,

i have an old Sony camcorder, the model slips me at the moment, but im pretty sure its a hi 8, its a good 10 years old so not digital or anything like that. For school projects and stuff we just played directly from the camcorder to a video in on a monitor. but i have a little more daunting task

i have about 12, 120 minute (MP120) tapes from a period in highschool where my family and i went to europe and i would like to transfer them to DVD, as the camera is gettin old and might soon be replaced, and simply archival purposes...

any suggestions on what the best manner to do so is, im open to any number of suggestions, including but not limited to, a professional service if one exists, buying a piece of equipment for the stereo/hometheater, etc.

i have a dvd burner in my pc,

i dont really know the quality of the stuff, afterall its probably touristy stuff, but there are alot of performances of my wind ensemble, so id like to atleast maintain the quality but its not what is important, right now they are just tapes, if they are dvds they would be far more useful.

if theres any more information i can add to help in your thoughts lemme know

You could transfer it from tape to the computer with a video capture card. Just plug the Video out or S-Video to the card along with the audio. Then convert it to MPEG-2 and burn it to dvd with your favorite burning program.
 
Best way to transfer HI8 to DVD

Get a Digital8 camera.. they do have built-in analog>digital converters for min quality loss (its ALOT better than going thru analog camera > capture card on pc)... you just hook up Digital8 camera to your computers firewire and start capturing DV video...

so;
Digital8 > pc firewire

You could also use a DV cam with pass-thru feature, so

analog hi8 > DV cam pasthru > pc firewire.. this is somewhat inferior to above setup quality wise, but still easy...

When the source are aged tapes, there are alot of degration on the video, and using regular capture methods will result in crappy quality and synch issues.. A higher model digital8 camera with built in time corrector solves this also.

I used this method to transfer materials from hi8 to pc for several projects..this is your best option for optimum quality..
 
I stream my Hi8 vids to my PC via FireWire + MS MovieMaker (integrated into WinXP)

Works perfectly fine for my needs. Last one I did was my daughter's Xmas play and I streamed it onto DVDs and sent them to relatives far and wide as Xmas presents. :)
