Chris I would guess that all depends on part of the country you live in. Personally I have not seen a retail computer show in several years. Maybe the 16 year old can pick what he wants on-line and you can get the parts that way. Or if you are wanting to mod and paint try finding a local shop that will help you (body shop not computer).

Should probably tell us where you live lol.
There is, and still is (?), a computer type "show" near me in Allentown, PA. I haven't been to it in maybe two years, but I have gone to it since I was a kid with my brother and father. They just rent out a large building from a farmers market for a week or whatever, and fill the place with computer vendors and products. So I imagine you just have to look a little harder to find these things and when they occur.

Those aren't really like car shows... more like flea markets.

Ideally I'd say if he could get involved with some LAN parties or even some forums online it would be better.

You could always hang out at the local gaming/internet cafe if they still have those?

Or just read every thread on [H]ardForum!

I wish this was mayhem.

Anywho I would check the main "conference" buildings in your nearby major city and check their schedules. For instance check out where your autoshow is to find out when they have a pc or other trade show.
